Something strange is happening.
The BBC Young Musician of the Year programmes are all DOG-free, except for the Percussion one, which has the "BBC Four" broadcast DOG at the 4x3 safe position. It's as if that one was received off-air, while the others were encoded from an internal DOG-free feed, and did not get the "BBC" DOG added top left. I don't use it that much, but I've not seen DOG-free content on iPlayer before. I have seem somewhat random choices between the small "BBC" DOG top left for some content, and the regular 4x3 safe broadcast for other content from BBC Three. I find the 4x3 safe DOGs really objectionable on iPlayer - even more so than on the actual broadcasts because, without overscan, they look even closer to the centre of the screen. Cheers, David. |

snip Imagine the outcry if a sports programme about a significant football match just showed studio discussion and recorded highlights but not the actual match. Even the BBC desk was a bit shocked when I phoned them to point out that the correct introduction to an article on the news just before the Grand Prix programme is not "Michael Schumaker Won..." And that's a few years back. Andy |

I've no idea why under current technology these identifiers need to be
visible anyway. Just seems like laziness and a disregard for the people you serve. I mean if they were hidden in the data they could be triggered to see what you were watching and presumably 'seen' in any pirated material. That was the least of the problems with this series of programmes. The most important one was that the TV broadcasts didn't give us a complete performance of ANY of the music None of them? The reason I used iPlayer was that I had mistakenly expected to hear full performances in the BBC Two final, which I started watching live. Having found this to be more like Classic FM meets Strictly Come Dancing, I thought I'd download the BBC Four programmes instead. I haven't watched them yet - just played the first few seconds to check they'd arrived correctly, and saw the DOG situation. So I suppose you've saved me the bother of watching them in their entirety. btw, was it just me, or did you think most of the parents and relatives were embarrassed to be answering such banal questions? I almost felt that they were embarrassed _for_ the presenter. I suppose it's to reach a younger audience. If so, make two versions: the kiddie version for BBC Three / CBBC, and a proper version for BBC Four / BBC Two! That makes the assumption that the potential younger audience don't want to listen to the music anyway - I'd have thought the _potential_ younger audience _do_ want to listen to the music, and others couldn't be tempted to watch anyway, so messing the programme up doesn't help anyone. Cheers, David. |

I haven't watched them yet - just played the first few seconds to check they'd arrived correctly, and saw the DOG situation. The BBC4 programmes were background documentaries about the contestants with brief snippets of their performances. The BBC2 "final" on Sunday was live (I think, though it's hard to tell these days), but the contestants were only repeating one selected movement from the concertos which they'd played in their entirety in the real final the previous day, which was not broadcast at all (unless you count the internet as a broadcast). So, no, we didn't hear any of the concertos complete, which is insane considering the event is supposed to be about music. btw, was it just me, or did you think most of the parents and relatives were embarrassed to be answering such banal questions? I almost felt that they were embarrassed _for_ the presenter. I think the presenter you refer to would be Nicola Loud. She won Young Musician in 1990 at the age of 15 with a stunning performance of the Bruch Violin Concerto (which I can still remember seeing and hearing live and complete). She seems as charming as a person as she is adept as a musician, but television interviewing is apparently not her greatest skill. I guess you just can't be good at everything. And I've signed that petition by the way. I'm very rarely moved to write to the BBC, but a music programme without the music is just plain bonkers. Rod. |
