What will Sky do to keep its hundreds of pounds a year - nine million
customer base - continuing to cough up loads of money for stuff the BBC
and
ITV are now giving away completely free!

baffles me : )

(how Sky will respond - not which one folk will prefer!)

Sky will do nothing different .

just my humble opinion and one i appreciate you might find odd but i
honestly think sky will 'quite quickly' die if they do nothing different

For all people have needed to do in the past was to phone sky and cancel
their subscription to have (in effect) a freesat box and channels .

alas with no ITV HD!

indeed no free HD at all if they cancel! - or am i wrong - perhaqpse a quite
rediculously priced Sky HD box is still avaiable - at 399?

and no sky + if they cancel - am i right in thinking that canclelled
customers dont get sky +?

seeing as virtually all families/households will want free HD, freeITV HD
and free PVR recording !! - why would anyone want to pay heavilly for these
facilities? Especailly given that all these facilities (once the right
equipment is purchased eg down your local supermearket) are freely offered
given away elsewhere..?

i honestly think theres more chance than the entire workforce at sky will be
spirited away by aliens than the odds of the sky subscriber base remaining
static or even growing!!

just my humble opinion mind : )

cheers

jb

how Sky will respond

Well, they would let them have Sky 1, etc on it, like they woun't on
Virgin/NTL and I guess they'll come up with some offer or something,
other thing they could do, is charge the BBC and ITV more money to
carry UK Gold, etc on Sky.

Speaking as a Premium SKY subscriber, does anyone actually watch the
pile of ****e called SKY 1?

That SKY considers their 1 channel to be some sort of premium channel
not to be made available FTA frankly beggars belief.

Compared to the other FTA offerings, well SKY1 doesn't compare does
it?

I'm afraid SKY's many and various attacks on the BBC will always lose
the argument once you actually compare the utter low budget ****e they
put out on their general entertainment channels with what's available
elsewhere - repeat SKY 1,2 and 3 are definitely not the future of
broadcasting in our house.

SKY Arts shows promise, mind you, but still a long way to go.

Shame really because the sports and films are first rate so why such
crap on the rest?

Erm, just 46 actually.

covering virtually every subject imaginable

As long as it's a subject that gets covered on BBC1, BBC2, ITV or
Channel 4. So that'll be car boot sales, moving abroad, and reality
TV.

(youd go stark raving mad if you trid to watch even a
fraction of the hundreds

46

now freely available

Which have been freely available for nearly ten years now

including almost all the most popular ones eg BBC ITV C4 etc

Including only the BBC, ITV, C4 and almost nothing else.

And 'free' access to the gradually increasing range of High Definition
channels

And free access to only one of the increasing range of free High
Definition channels.

And free freesat PVR HD and non HD

Neither of which exist yet.

with receivers with hard disk recording facilities

Which don't exist yet.

All freely available

Apart from the fact that they don't exist yet.

and all non subscription..

Apart from the licence fee

The BBC and ITV have ALWAYS been completely free. Anyone who pays
money to Sky is doing so because they want an alternative to the
mindless **** that the large channels pump out.

Freesat is the perfect product for people who just adore the
terrestrial channels and want nothing but. And since those people have
always been able to receive the terrestrials on satellite for free,
it's very unlikely that they've ever been Sky subscribers at all.

The way you're talking you would think that this was something new!

whilst you may very well be right - i have assumed that a third of its

That would assume that a third of Sky customers subscribe to Sky so
that they can watch the same five channels they've always been able to
get for free.

- egg'd on
by ITV HD which is very popular eg Emerdale Corry etc etc.

ITV HD, which also does not exist yet and certainly won't have HD
"Emerdale" or "Corry" any time soon.

only the lean mean responsive service providers will survive whilst big
dinosaurs which think that everything will be the same tomorrow as it was
yesterday will litteraly turn to dust..

Such as the big dinosaurs who proved how lean and mean and responsive
they are by launching a digital satellite service some ten years after
their rivals had?

Yes, Sky will be soiling themselves with worry, I'm sure.

what does sky actually have to

You're forgetting. The BBC and ITV intend primarily on carrying their
own content. And, as 'free' broadcasters, the content that they will
carry is exactly that which can only be carried for free.

Very little threat to Sky's model of carrying premium content which
people will pay for. You don't think Sky Sports or Living TV or UK
Gold are suddenly going to become available for free, do you?

Yes, you are. You don't need any Sky subscription to watch BBC HD,
Channel 4 HD and other free-to-air HD channels on a Sky HD box.

yes indeed... but my point was how much is a sky HD box for a 'freesat for
sky' viewer please forgive me if im wrong but i had the impression that
official HD boxes for non subscribers are an astronomical 399 - when
compared to the the freesat for bbc boxes selling in comet now for 149 ....

Default How Will Sky Respond to Freesat

the satellite tv world changed irevocably on 6th may 2008 skys virtual
monopoly of uk satellite tv ended for good.... and a breath of fresh air is
gradually sweeping through tired old sky salesrooms up and down the country

soon folk all over the uk willl be able to buy a high definition hard disk
pvr satellite reciever (or a value basic model if they wish) along with
their milk and cornflakes in their local supermarket... take it home.. plug
it in and then phone sky if they want to... (and providing their 12 month
sentence is up) ... ask to cancel the payments...

simple...

cheers

someone just posted a mesaage on another newsgroup saying his new brother
has just got a new Humax HD reciever and has found roughly 300 or 400
channels

that ties with my experience which is that roughly a thousand tv channels
exist of which very roughly half are actually scrambled..

i guess that there may have been 46 fta channels when astra 2 was launched
way back but that figure is completely wrong now and everso slightly
misleading if youll forgive me for saying so :0
