Well is was mentioned as providing 80 channels on the R4 7:30am news, so
I assume it's no longer a "state secret".

BBC announcement here. It's not on the BBC News front page; you have to
select the "technology" page, and it's the second story after a report on
Yahoo share prices:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/7384928.stm

Strangely, that's the only online media source that I've found so far
that's announcing Freesat today, on its launch day. It's nowhere in the
ITV news or Channel 4 News pages.

I can't remember exactly what the lineup looked like two weeks back, but
there's now five Freesat boxes on the Argos web site, all marked
unavailable for delivery, but one of them, the Humax Foxsat HD is now
marked as reservable for pick-up from stores:

Ah. I got the list of five boxes by following an obscure route through
the menu tree (shown in light gray about two inches from the top).

Interesting indeed. So *search* on Freesat, and you see nothing
apparently available yet. It's because the Humax box description doesn't
contain the word "Freesat". It's only in its product-details subpage.

Here, by the way, is the new BBC HD promotional advert. If you're the
sort of person that reads all the fine text, you'll see the words
"Available on Sky, Virgin Media, and now Freesat" on the static page at
the end of the advert.

I was expecting these boxes to be recorders.

I find myself wondering what the 150 pound box does that the 50 pound one
doesn't

The expensive ones get the BBC HD channel.
Its on in the evenings.

I think these boxes MIGHT be made so as not to get the HD stations that Sky
boxes can. About 9 HD stations on Sky Currys tell me.

Sky runs a collection of channels under the name of "Sky-HD" - Freesat
STBs will *never* get these - as they are all encrypted.

As in, it's fallen over in a molten heap.
