Default Looking for an audio electronics DIY group

Is there an audio electronics DIY newsgroup anywhere? I'm building a
5.1 switching box and need some advice.

uk.d-i-y or uk.rec.audio might yield some help.

I found uk.rec.audio populated with too many people who wouldn't accept
that they were wrong. But then maybe that's true of all Newsgroups!

Think it's true of all newsgroups. Anyway, I will remain off-topic
and mention what I plan to do here. I'm building a 5.1 switching unit
to connect a Blu-ray player & SACD/DVD-A player to the 5.1 inputs of
my amp. Originally, I had the idea of using 3 douple pole relays
(BT47's) operated by a single push button and powered by 12vdc. But
now I have found a 6-pole rotary switch at RS, which would do the job
without the need for power, or relays. The only thing is the thought
of soldering 18 wires to a rotary switch :-(

That tends to suggest you think you are always right. ;-)

All 'hi-fi' groups tend to be very different from others - disagreeing in
any way with a vinyl or valve nutter tends to bring a response far worse
than if you'd insulted their spouse. ;-)

You certainly need to get your head round wiring multipole switches - but
then again you need to with relays. The actual soldering wouldn't be much
different as signal relays can have pretty densely packed connectors.
The relay approach appeals to me as it would be easy to add remote
operation. And the cost of the parts with either approach insignificant
compared to the work in building it.

In that particular case, I was. I mean, I had worked for the company for
over 12 years and knew it's products inside out. But no, what I was
saying was wrong, because the other person said I was.

Yes, it was vinyl related. Frequency response of Shure cartridges with
different loadings.

If I went the relay route, I would've used Veroboard for mounting the
relays and wiring. But I'm thinking of trying the makaswitch at RS as
it's pretty cheap. Now I need to find six different coloured phono
sockets/plugs. I can only find five colours.

Curious to know what answer(s) you got. I've been looking at loading of MM
carts recently. Have noticed that various pages, etc, on this seem to only
deal with electrical or mechanical resonances/loadings in isolation so give
misleading advice.

FWIW I did some recent measurements and still got optimum for Shure MMs
using about 47k/280pF as traditionally recommended. Results will be
appearing elsewhere in the near future. :-)

Slainte,

Jim
