Default Phillips HDTV Turned Green

The Philliips 60" rear projection HDTV I've had for about 3 years
turned green for a short time last night, and then flashed back and
forth between green and normal. So I turned it off and went to sleep.

Iit was back to normal this morning when I watched it for about 1/2
hr., but I suspect that the problem is going to come back sooner or
later. I was just wondering if I'm looking at a costly CRT
replacement, as I suspect. Or could it be a minor, hopefully, less
expensive problem?

Thanks in advance or any help anyone can give me on this.

A few yeas ago I had a similar problem crop up with an old CRT analog
set, and the repair person said the degaussing coil or the driver
circuit had gone fishing permanently. As it turned out, the circuit
board for it was a simple fix. Afterward, I gave the set to my sis and
she still uses it now three years later. Had it been the coil itself it
would've been a different kettle.

Thanks for the response, Jer, but someone else suggested elsewhere
that the blue lamp was probably going, and would eventually have to be
replaced. So, I guess I'll just have to wait until it happens again to
see if the lamp did fail, as I don't know how to test the degaussing
coil or circuit. Nor would I feel comfortable replacing either of
those. So I hope it is a lamp.

Any additional opinions as to the nature of the problem iwould
therefore also be appreciated.

Thanks

Bill

Re-reading your post (which I didn't do very well the first time), you
said it was a RPTV, and I don't know if it even has a degaussing coil -
I know CRT TV's have degaussing coils. In older sets, there was a
button somewhere to momentarily activate it, but newer CRT TV designs
activated the degaussing coil automagically every time the set was
turned on, saving them the cost of one entire push button, and saving
the hearts of many people that had the curiosity to ask 'what's this
button for' and the guts to actually push it. On my old set, after the
coil circuit went tits up, the screen center was green, outside that it
was orange (odd), outside that it was blue - a virtual kaleidescope of a
low-def color TV - auspiciously like being on acid. Again. Scary, that.

I hope it's a lamp too.

If you lost only blue, your picture would be in shades of red, green, and
yellow, but you said it was just green.

Next time, try jostling the set and see if it makes a difference.

Most likely an oxidation problem on a slide on connector.

Most likely spot is where there is the most heat.

Often these can be fixed by recrimping the connector.

Time to have it looked at by a tech. Possible that the green crt is
intermittantly shorting causing the bright green effect, or there may just
be problems in the green drive circuitry including the socket assembly.
Another possibility is the green crt has leaked coolant down onto the crt
socket assembly causing the intermittant problem, either way have it checked
out to be sure.
