Default Cheap DVD recorder with 8 hour record?

Anybody know if there's a cheap DVD recorder capable of recording at
least eight hours? It's for a video capture application where quality
isn't an issue, so a cheap analogue-only dvd recorder from a supermarket
would be fine.

Almost all will record for 6 hours at reduced quality.

Wouldn't you be better off buying a Hard Drive recorder,
much better for continuous high quality recording,
and they aren't expensive anymore, take a look in Maplins

Analogue as in only an analogue tuner, I meant. How long is super long
play?

You can only reburn a DVDrw at most a hundred times,
i've had some fail after only about a dozen times.

I wanted video-capture -- meaning capture from a composite-video input,
which all DVD recorders have, but Freeview PVRs don't. And I'd assumed
that DVD-recorders with hard drives are expensive? I'll have to check.

Anyway, I've looked at Maplin, as you suggested, and I've stumbled across
a £70 media player/recorder and hard drive enclosure that might be
exactly what I want. I think it must have a video input since it says
that it can record from a TV.

That's the sort of thing, but I suspect there's dedicated equipment of a
similar type

Where on earth did you hear that? Maybe if they are manufactured by some
"Arfur Daley" type character but "real" discs can be re-written about 1,000
times:

I've used Traxdata 4X DVD+RW in my DVD recorder and re-written the same 5
discs over 150 times now.

John
PS, I do agree with your next post that a DVD/HDD recorder is probably the
best way to go.

Personal experience, I use mostly Philips +RW, sometimes Maxell.
I wouldn't count on any of them rewriting more than 50 times,
sometimes they easily will, sometimes they fail before that.

With DVDs you never know, not a good idea when you need reliability
like surveillance recording.

Currently HD's are the way to go, in a few years big Flash memory will take
over
