My 37" (not 37' as I posted last time) Wastinghouse LCD has been
declared unrepairable by my servicer, and the warranty folks (N.E.W.) agree. They are going to process a check for me in 3-5 business days. My servicer just ran into a stonewall trying to get the needed parts. One thing for sure--my next set will NOT be one of the second-tier brands. I want something that can be serviced if something goes wrong! Dave Clary Corpus Christi, TX |

Even a top tier product can be beyond reasonable repair, just like a brand new totaled out car. I imagine the cost to replace a bad LCD display would pretty much total any LCD TV just in local labor cost. I don't know what you are complaining about. you say you are getting a check. Just buy new one. it's likely to be better than the original anyway. Want another 37"? I'm very happy with the Envision I got at Staples for $599. Great tuner and picture. Now I could have spent $2k for the same size, but in the end all I would do is lose more money to depreciation.:-) -- Want the ultimate in free OTA SD/HDTV Recorder? http://mythtv.org My Tivo Experience http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/tivo.htm Tivo HD/S3 compared http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/mythtivo.htm AMD cpu help http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/cpu.php |

I imagine the cost to replace a bad LCD display would pretty much total any LCD TV just in local labor cost. Given that a HDTV video card costs less than $100, and small HDTVs cost less than $300, at least 85% of a $2000 TV must be LCD and case. m... wrote: You don't think that the wasting in the brand name could have been saying that you were wasting your money, do you? It sounds like a Chinese knockoff of a Westinghouse. No Sir. The fact is that many of the second tier brands (Vizio, Westinghouse, etc) do not have a parts department where you can order spare parts, and they only service sets during the manufacturers warranty (this does not include an extended warranty offered by a 3rd party). Therefore it is very difficult to fix them after the warranty expires, even if only a minor repair is needed. If a warranty repair is needed (manufacturers warranty) then the customer must return the set to manufacturer (they usually do not have local repair stations) using the original shipping container. If you don't have the original shipping container, they will sell you one (including shipping) for about $500.00 - $750.00. Westinghouse may sound like a name-brand, but they just buy sets made by contract manufacturers in Asia. At one time, Westinghouse was a large US company that made their own products. |

There is some hope though that Westinghouse will introduce some innovative display technology (comparable to OLED) within the next two years. The current product lines are intended to re-establish the brand name and invigorate a marketing channel. I wish them well. Additions to the U.S. manufacturing sector are welcome! Small note on the shipping container. When my HDTV was delivered last year, the retailer asked if I had a place to store the box. He offered to store it for 90 days for $25. I had wondered what that was all about -- thanks for the enlightenment! -- pj |

It should be noted that, though these products advertise the Westinghouse name, they are neither manufactured by the historic Westinghouse company nor are the quality standards necessarily actively maintained by WEC." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westing...ion_%281998%29 -- jer email reply - I am not a 'ten' |

The American company known as Westinghouse was broken up and the pieces
sold off decades ago. The use of the brand name "Westinghouse" was sold to the highest bidder. There is no US manufacturing company known as "Westinghouse"! Any product sold under that name is a rip-off trying to capitalize on a name that was once an American icon. Such products are not an addition to the US manufacturing sector. They are cheap products sold by unknown foreign manufacturers trying to make a fast buck. They are sold with no customer support, no customer service. Buyer Beware! If they work - fine. If they break - they go straight to the garbage bin. "...introduce some innovative display technology (comparable to OLED)..."? Not very likely. Mark A wrote: "pj" wrote in message ...
