Everyone's favorite is the one they subscribe to.

The only real evaluation can be made by people who subscribe to both,
and I don't know anyone who does that.

BTW, my "favorite" is DirecTV, 'cause that's who I've used for years.
My only experience with Dish is seeing it on a friend's HDTV who
preferred "stretched" SD so her widescreen was filled, so I discount
everything I saw there.

Dish is superior in their channel listingg. Directtv putsallthe ^$%$^^
$ pay per view right in the middle so you can just scroll through.
Dish has theat the end. I've seen both and they ae comparable. Dish
has better value and more channels esp. in HD

Had DTV. Now have DN. DN has much better DVRs,
the 722 is incredible. I've had it for three months now, and just
discovered you can upload jpegs from a usb device to the hard drive. Plus
you can add an external hard drive, without losing the use of the built in
hard drive, like you do with the DTV unit. Also, you can record OTA HD
programming to the hard drive with its built in ATSC tuner.
Far superior to DTVs equipment. The ability to record two shows from
satellite (dual tuners), and one from OTA HD, while watching something from
the hard drive is amazing.

DishNet. Because DirecTV once sued its own customers that had a record of
having bought a card reader device of the same type used in their receivers,
without doing any investigation whatsoever to determine if any of them had
any legitimate use for one. Companies run by lawyers are bad news and should
be avoided for 10 years or more since the last bad event.

How well does it do on SD programming that's coming across in SD format (as
opposed to SD programming that is sent across in some way in an HD format)?
Is it possible to be sure it stays in SD format when fed to the display?

Does it have component analog output that works on all channels?

Does it have HDMI digital output that does not require HDCP?

Does very good. It up-converts it to 1080i, and it looks good, for SD. You
can also tell the receiver to up-convert it to 720. Your choice in the
menus, as well as screen size.

Is it possible to be sure it stays in SD format when fed to the display?

Um, then the TV does the upconversion. The reciever, IMO, does a better
job. (Mitsubishi 57" DLP)

Yes. S-video and composite also. Either from satellite, OTA, or hard
drive.

Does it have HDMI digital output that does not require HDCP?

It has HDMI output (its how my tv is hooked up), but since I dont have a HD
DVD recorder with HDMI input, (doesnt exist yet) dont know about the HDCP.
My SD DVD recorder has recorded everything just fine so far, but it is
output in 4:3 format, which does a number on HD programming (chopped). By
playing with the menus, I might be able to get the S-video output to be in
letterbox, but why bother. For more permanent storage, I add another
external HD.

I might add, the 722 has a variety of selectable formats
for picture size, available in both SD and HD formats.
The TV gives me two picture size choices in HD programming.
