Default Sharp Aquos Flickers

I am having a problem with a new aquos lc-37d62u.
When connected to my vcr, in playback mode the image flickers on for
two
seconds then the screen goes black for two seconds, this sequence
repeats endlessly.
It is connected to a panasonic pv-d744s combo vcr/dvd player which is
approx 5 years old.
Conneted VCR composite video to various input ports on the TV with
same result.
Used same vcr/dvd player with two other aquos sets, a
lc-26ga4u and lc-g5c32u, with no play back problem with the vcr.
Contacted sharp's trouble desk, no help, they suggested that it was a
vcr trouble.
I was wondering if any other people are having same trouble?
The panasonic has two outputs one for the DVD and one for the VCR.
So for all intents and purposess it can be consider two units and the
DVD portion of the unit works correctly.

What is the model of the set with the problem?

Call trouble desk back and be sure they understand that it is a problem
with a specific TV model. Tell them that if they cannot fix it, then a
recall needs to be done and you'll be calling the FTC about it. Remind
them that the VCR output is fine since it works on other models. It
would be a good idea to check even more models to be sure, including
other manufacturers.

The nature of the problem is probably sync frequency stability. A TV set
should tolerate a certain level of instability, since a VCR typically has
a certain amount of that. Perhaps your VCR is less stable and is pushing
the limits of a TV's ability to lock up. But some TVs could have more or
less such ability.

I've never seen this happen with VCR to LCD. I have seen this with older
VCRs that were about to die, on CRT TVs. It was not exactly like you
gave, but the TV picture did blink in and out with the picture being quite
bad. A _very_ old TV that doesn't have those "blank out a bad picture"
features would be useful to the experienced eye to see just how bad the
VCR might be.

I had a similar behaviour in the past with a VCR.
I'm in Europe and therefore use SCART connectors so maybe it's not
applicable.

My problem was caused by feedback signal from the TV back to the VCR,
so whenever the VCR Input Selector was set to the input from the TV,
the VCR signal was fed back and casued a similar "oscillation".

I guess you don't use SCART, but if you have a video signal line
connected out from the TV to the VCR, try changing the VCR input
selector to an unused (or the RF) input.

Some (maybe even many) LCD sets are very sensitive to out-of-spec sync.
This can also be a problem when trying to use 1977-1984-era video game
systems on an LCD TV. Your problem sounds like a sync problem. This is
not unheard of with videotape when there is no (or bad) time-base
correction. I agree that you should try another VCR.

I have accidentally done that with NTSC and S video. Sounds plausible. Also,
if it is an older VCR, see if it has a "tracking" or picture stabilizing
option.

Had a similar issue with a Philips DVD750VR/17
and a Panasonic EDTV. To add a gamebox, we
bought a Sony SB-V55A S-Video/composite
switchbox. No flicker when the dvd/vcr was fed
to the TV via that box. Might be worth a try.

Check with eBay and/or Amazon.

Similar problem with our Samsung DLP 4 years back. While it wasn't
going black, it had uneven color in the top 1/4 to 1/3 of the screen.
I bought a new VCR which didn't help. The second new VCR included a
digital TBC which cleared everything up but it was pricey at $400. At
this point the VCR gets very little use as the recording burden has
fallen to multiple PCs which record HD and is literally flawless.
