What's one of them, then? Is it capable of receiving HD Terrestrial TV? The hardware will receive any DVB-T transmission, decoding either MPEG2 or MPEG4 is up to the software, we don't have MPEG4 on DVB-T in the UK (France do, but encrypted so software probably won't decode that, and Sky would like to, also will be encrypted). To receive HD in the UK, you'll need to wait until DVB-T2 is ratified and products available and transmissions start (on a single mux). |

wrote: I suppose you consider your VHS records 'all picture waves' in that case then. But you'd be wrong in both cases. As usual. It should be capable of recording all electrical waves modulated around a particular frequency, the independant of **the signal shape just as a sound recorder can record all sound waves so as to give a reasonable reproduction on the original when played. It's a little more complicated than that. A VHS recorder assumes the input signal is not just any old bundle of frequencies but a particular waveform which includes synchronising pulses which conform to a specification. These pulses are required to synchronise the head drum to place the discontinuity that arises from switching between heads into a part of the output video signal where it will be inconspicuous. In other words it depends crucially on the video signal consisting of a repetitive pattern rather than a continuous wave. It also depends on the colour information conforming to a particular specification so that it can process it accordingly, but I suspect you wouldn't want me to bore you with the details. Rod. |

I can pick up a HD USB stick for about £14 considerably cheaper (by over £200) than what you will pay for a HD PVR (if you can find one). What's one of them, then? Is it capable of receiving HD Terrestrial TV? If it is, I'll rush out and get one right now.................... IYs a stick which you plug into your USB port which is capable of receiving HDTV, looks a bit like one of theose USB memory sticks, isf you know what they are. But if you are not computer literate maybe it is not the thing for you. Chas |

But if you are not computer literate maybe it is not the thing for you. When the HD tests using DVB-T1 were taking place, a few people were able to use a USB stick to record the data stream onto hard drive, and there were some attempts to decode that stream afterwards with a lot of computing power and not much success. |
