Stick with your VHS, then. You know it makes sense.

No what makes sense if that the recorder records all digital formats.

Most items are consumables with a finite
life. Get over it.

You mmight enjoy being ripped of by the consumer
electronics industry but I certaintly don't.
No doubt the marketing people are laughing all the way
to the bank as they screw every penny possible out of mug consumers
like you.

Still at least you appear to have deluded yourself you are not
being ripped off.

A fool and his money..................

Nope. But I never expected it to.

Will you are wrong then, you should have expected
it to be able to do that.

No, you're wrong. (yes, troll baiting I know)

If I buy an MPEG2 receiver, I wouldn't expect it to handle MPEG4 as
well. I've had it for the last 2.5 years and had great enjoyment out of
it. If I ever want to record HD broadcasts, then I'll buy an HD
receiver - but I can't see me doing that for a good few years yet.

If I buy a petrol car, I wouldn't expect it to run on diesel.

Did you expect to have to buy a new TV when channel 4 ot 5
went on air?

Well, actually when channel 5 came out I was still in school! My
parents couldn't receive channel 5 though due to aerial placement (in
loft). They never got channel 5 until they bought a digital box - so
they did have to buy a new receiver to receive channel 5 (or pay for an
external aerial).

I never expected it to make tea for me in the morning either.

As it turns out, I don't have an HD TV, or HD receiver. Nor do I have any
plans to change that - at least - not until either breaks down.

So you won't be able to see all freeview channels,.

And that's a problem?

Let me repeat my self. I DO NOT HAVE AN HD TV. So what's the point of
me worrying about whether my PVR can record HD if I can't actually view it?

And personally, HD is a lot of fuss about nothing. Yes, it might look
better, but I've no complaints about my old analogue CRT TV + Freeview
PVR. I'm currently dreading the day the TV dies as I've yet to see a
reasonably priced 28-30" HD/LCD display which gives comparable quality
on standard (ie. non-HD) sources. Plus, the glass front is pretty
robust compared the usual soft plastic of LCDs, and having small kids
around I see no point in getting something which could easily be damaged
by small kids.

Personally, if I wanted HD, I'd probably go with the FreeSat service.
And please don't start a "Is your Freeview recorder obsolete as it can't
receive FreeSat?" thread.

I suppose they could design a device that records the raw digital data
received from the aerial/LNB, that could be (end) format
independent...

If you wanted to record direct from the aerial so that future encoding
schemes could be recovered from it, you'd need to record with a /very/
high digital sampling rate and resolution, or record as analogue, good luck!

I didn't say it would be practical, if it was I would have expected it
would have been done by now!

How come sound recorders can really all sound waves,
irrigardless of their soape of frequency. But then
maybe sound recorders contain magic?
