Default TTOT - Car Registrations

I know this is WAY off topic, but this is a busy group populated with
(some) intelligent people, so I thought I'd run it by you...

I'm currently having an argument with a friend, he reckons the DVLA will
give you information on any car registration (specifically name and address
of owner) if you pay a 5 quid fee. I'm saying that can't be right, surely
too open to abuse? I've had a look on the DVLA website, and I can't find
anything about searching for details for registrations.
Anyone know if this is possible? I'm not really interested in exactly HOW it
can be done, only if it CAN be done...

Regards,
Chris.

You're kind of both right: you have to show reasonable cause, and your
details go on file. So there is a protection against abuse.

This could be things like
- safety recall
- hit and run
- abandoned vehicle
- unathorised parking on private land

You have to give them a plausible reason for wanting it, like belonging to a
cowboy clamping or car parking outfit.

Thanks. That kind of makes sense, so if some git hits your car, then shoots
off without stopping you have some hope of tracking him down, but you can't
use the service to stalk pretty blonde drivers who catch your eye in the
traffic jam. (though, I suppose, if you claimed they hit your car, and shot
off without stopping...)

You insurance Co. or legal Co. etc. will, not you (as a private
person) - basically the request has to come on company headed paper
quoting either the company or VAT number etc. As you said (snipped),
to allow anyone with a fiver to spare and a plausible excuse to obtain
such details would be an abusers/stalkers charter!

Nope, there is a form (V888) for private individuals to request this
information. V888/2 is for companies (not for penalty charges) and
V888/3 is for companies (for penalty charges).

However, whoever you are, you need to provide "reasonable cause". Doing
this as a private individual may be more difficult, I don't know.

And the basic info is £2.50. Additional info, copies of documents etc
are £5.
