have any BD surround sound movies been
released with DTS MA?

(i assume that's the same as DTS-HD?)

Lots of Fox releases have DTS MA

And MA is supposedly a bit better than DTS MA

ok Lloyd, that's a typo right? g

i mean, MA is better than MA LOL

i suppose wiki is our friend?

i tried http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DTS
but didn't see any ref to DTS MA

help me out here. seriously

exactly what is DTS MA, and does wiki
have a writeup on it?

thank you

Thanks for taking the time to address these issues.

-snip---

if you have others who'll need a simple
setup to use the gear to listen or watch
something, then maybe an AVR with 1.2/1.3
is the way to go

me, i'm going with the name that i trust
for good sound: Denon

Why not both? In any event, I think I'll wait a little longer.

no worries, that may well be a very good idea

- Second generation AVRs and BRs

that is especially amusing

you must be a fair amount younger than me.

AVRs are likely on at least their 8th
generation (or later).

HDMI 1.3 AVRs. E.g., the Onkyo 606, 706, 806, etc.

HD-DVD was on it's
3rd generation (your A35) when Toshiba pulled
the plug. BRs, if you go by the 1.0 1.1 2.0
stuff, will soon hit 3rd gen, but the reality
is that BRs have likely gone thru more

I wouldn't call a 2.0 BluRay a "new generation." Still a Beta Test,
realistially speaking.

i used to think that a newer piece of hi-fi
gear of necessity had to sound better than
an older piece of gear

the truth with sound amps preamps AVRs
and HD units is that a good unit is
a good unit is a good unit

meaning that they may be exceeded by
a still newer unit, but it won't be
by much

a bad unit, on the other hand, is the
best learning experience

will hopefully resolve some of the limitations and glitches.

good luck with whatever you do

kindly stop asking me questions g

Kindly stop asnwering my questions until you know a little more about
what you are talking about.

Well, you know sometimes the fingers are faster than the brain,
especially for us old farts!! G

I think you would have to go to DTS home site and I don't know where
that is.

Here is the way I understand it. DTS-HDMA is a 2-part codec, there is
the DTS-HD core and then some other part that is used with those devices
having the ability. There aren't many, but there are more coming.

i'll respond here, to you, within
the next 4 days on it (not that it
will make an iota of diff to you)

i got it hooked up yesterday morning (phew!)

sound-wise, it's a noticeably better unit
than my 18 month old Denon AVR-2307CI

it clearly pulls a bit more current overall
(with the same speaker setup), but a fan still
isn't needed and i've got noticeably more
power (and a bit more of dynamice range).

also, i've got more flexibility with matching
my subwoofer volume level to my other 5 speakers,
regardless of whether my input is from my OPPO
DVD player via EXT.IN (best for DVD movies and CDs
(regular, as well as those with HDCD encoding;
none of my other CD players recognizes HDCD
(see wiki))), or A35 via HDMI cable

plus it (A35) decodes Dolby TrueHD (that my/your
A35 can send out undecoded), which gives a really
superior sound result (via HDMI cable); also
true for decoding DD+ 5.1 (i.e. The Last Samurai);
the only two that i've tried HD-DVD movies
with (so far); i'm looking forward to the
likelihood of DTS and DTS-HD also sounding
much better (from a HD-DVD disc) when i have
the 3808CI doing the decoding

it gives a whole new perspective on HD-DVD
movies that have DD+ 5.1 sound (which afaik
is nearly all of them)

i've also compared sending the sound converted
(in the A35) via HDMI cable, but as multichannel
PCM (one unneeded Digital-to-digital conversion),
and also with the A35 doing the conversion to
analog (and sending via the 6 RCA cables (5.1));
the conversion to analog was by far the bigger
disappointment, and i plan to disconnect the
6 RCA cables and only run sound via the HDMI cable
from the A35 player

since you frequent the audio n/g's, worth noting is the
thread: Home Theater Advice - Receivers and Speakers
in rec.audio.high-end where bob posted on 12-15-'07:
"And then buy the best Denon receiver you can afford
with what's left."

imo, just how necessary HDMI 1.2/1.3 are to you
remains to be seen

The 3808CI seems to be a good choice. Hope you enjoy it.

I didn't invest in many HD DVD discs, and I will probably trade my A35
back to the dealer for store credit that I can use to get one of the new
BluRay players. Looking at the Panasonic BD50 or BD30, or the Sony S350
or S550, to be released in a few months. Also the Oppo 83 for SACD and
SDVD.

I've been using the BD-S500 in the main system here for a coupla months
now and it's performance had been stellar. It plays everything I've
tossed into it so far.

Wha...? Crutchfield still lists the S500 new for $600, but shows
out-of-stock - Best Buy also listed for same, but doesn't even list it
now. And since the S550 has already been announced...
