Default Laptop, TV card and Sky

A friend is bringing over his new laptop and new TV card tomorrow (I
don't know the makes) and wants to connect up to my Sky+ box to
demonstrate the card. I told him that I don't have Freeview and I
doubted therefore whether it would work -- but he insists that it will.

Can he connect to my Sky subscription service and play it on his laptop?

he can connect the s-video output from your sky box to the s-video input on
his tv card - but he'll be using the pc as a monitor - not actually tuning
into satellite tv with the pc.

He could if he had 1) a DVB-S tuner (in some form or the other - USB
stick, perhaps?), 2) an unauthorized software implementation of a
VideoGuard (NDS) CAM3), and 3) a smart card reader for the Sky viewing
card. But if he did, he wouldn't need your actual Sky box for anything -
only the lead from the dish.

Otherwise, it would have to be what the others have been describing...
i.e., an analogue video capture or tv tuner card of some sort, feeding
from the s-video, composite video, or even RF output of your Sky+ box.
