Default PC TV DVI to HDTV HDMI?

Previously, I had a Dell 1920x1200 LCD monitor hooked up to the DVI
out on my low-end ATI video card. It worked fine and I was also able
to get full 1080i from our cable-company DVR.

We replaced the monitor with a Panasonic plasma (TH-50PZ85U). While
HDMI output from the cable box works great (either at 720p or 1080i),
I'm having trouble getting the full 1080p resolution from my PC
connected via a DVI out with a DVI-to-HDMI adapter and an HDMI cable.

It's hooked up to HDMI1 input (DVR on HDMI2, and the HDMI3 input
supposedly won't handle DVI converted signals). I'm using DVI since
the PC/VGA input won't handle resolutions over 1280x1024 or 1386x768).

The computer detects the display fine and lists 1920x1080p as a
resolution. When that resolution is selected, the monitor does
display most of the desktop. However, it shifts the whole display
left by about 40px or so so I loose some of the screen off the side.
In addition, on the right edge of the screen, there's a black bar 20px
wide at the edge of the desktop and then a strip
approximately 20px wide that has a repeat of what's in the center of
the desktop all the way at the edge.

If I lower the resolution output by the computer to 1680x1050, I get
the whole desktop to fit on the display, but with black bars around it
(wasting space) and that same ~20px wide copy of the center of the
desktop on the right edge of the screen.

Anyone have hints as to what I can do to resolve this?

have you tried auto sync on the tv - or whatever it's called on yours, once
you've set the output and get the bands?
on my sharp lcd at least i have to do that to make the image appear
correctly.

I get the same 'fault' with a Samsung DLP connected to the PC with
DVI. I say 'fault' because historically, TV screens have been
overscanned to account for tubes wearing out in the receiver. OK,
there are no tubes anymore but the practice continues. You just KNOW
somebody would complain if there _wasn't_ any overscan so it's a no-
win for the manufacturer.

On the Samsung there is a setting for the TV to 'zoom' out a little so
the entire desktop can be seen. The math errors of this scaling make
an image you don't want to watch too long. I rarely do the zoom trick
as I can find enough of an icon to run whatever software. That
computer is strictly for DVR use so I don't mind the very minor
inconvenience.

Default PC TV DVI to HDTV HDMI?

From: http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-t...-32887121.html

PC: Via HDMI, the Panasonic performed perfectly, resolving every
detail of a 1,920x1,080 source according to DisplayMate.
Unfortunately, the set's maximum resolution via VGA is much lower,
just 1,360x768, and since that resolution doesn't match the panel's
pixels exactly, we saw the usual softness around edges and funky-
looking text.

However it also says -

The TH-46PZ85U offers five aspect ratio controls for HD sources, more
than most HDTVs on the market. There's also a setting that lets the TV
display every pixel of 1080i and 1080p sources without overscan, and
we recommend using it unless you notice interference along the extreme
edges of the screen, which can occur on some HD channels. The same
selection of five modes is also available for SD sources.

So use HDMI and the no overscan mode and you should be able to get
pixel perfect 1920x1080
