If I buy a Sky+ box from ebay, for example, will it just work if I plug it
in and put our viewing card in it or are there rigmaroles to go through?

for it to work properly you need 2 satellite feeds - not just the 1 you have
for a normal sky box.

And if the Sky card has premium channels, the card and box need to be
paired by BSkyB before they will work.

If you're expecting the hard disk recording feature to work, you'll
either need a sky subscription, or pay a sky+ monthly fee.

I believe any active sub is fine, whether they need to know you now have
a sky+ box when you didn't before, so they can activate something, I
don't know.
