my rig in Spain looks somewhat similar to *as found #2* the exception is
that the switch is well up a plastic tube and is protected from the
elements, on the down side the local lizards think it's a dandy place to
live.

Do it with self amalg. It's fiddly but do-able. I do it every time without
any bother. The trick is to thread it loose through the gap then pull it
tight and only then let it contact the plug or previous layer of tape. Then
hold it to the plug or previous layer of tape with a thumb and repeat the
process.
