There is the famous "Cult of Mac" idea that Mac users are akin to religious zealots, who wait for the 6 monthly Keynote speech by Steve Jobs; these idol worshippers who will buy whatever Apple produces, branded with the Apple logo. So, once the "Cult of BBC Three" emerges, the channel's logo will be indispensible... No doubt such a 'cult' wouldn't be "famous" if it were a common phenomenon across brands. People take onboard suggestions. They go with what they are familiar with. There is such thing as brand loyalty and halo effects. People do respond to advertising. This is true. It is, however, a phenomenon whose impact and generality can be overstated. Yes, publicly visible status symbols like cars, clothes, phones (and indeed iPods) can generate kudos, for precisely that reason - they are publicly visible. They make a statement without the bearer needing to interject into conversation "Hey, you know that Torchwood thing? I watched it on *BBC Three* last night. How cool is that, man?" While there may be a segment of the population that thinks "hey, you got a Mac? You are sooo cool, man, I mean all that rebelling against Bill Gates is teh nutz!", by and large computers don't fall into that category - after the public revelation that I bought a Compaq I don't imagine Dell users peering down their noses at me or those with an Acer feeling inadequate. TV channels likewise don't fit the mould - I think MTV is the only channel that had any success marketing itself for the 'cool' value, and that success was mostly due to its subject matter, the sorts of new music that kids talk about anyway. There's no statement to be made by watching BBC Three (or whatever) as a channel, as opposed to watching specific programmes for their content. Lots of purchasing decisions are made by people not based on the quality or suitability of a product but on the image that it will then give them. Cars, clothes, phones are all good examples. Cars, clothes and phones are all mostly up to the task regardless of brand, everyday items where having the highest quality isn't critical (even in a professional context in most cases). Simply put, the only basis on which to distinguish a lot of identikit products of this sort is the brand name. But you won't find anyone kitting up for an expedition buying Alpine Lowe or Berghaus because they're cool, only because they're demonstrably up to the tasks they'll be used for, and many other brands might not cut it. When selecting a camera or microphone for my professional work, technical specifications are key. Brand loyalty only comes into its own when more important factors are excluded from the analysis. And this, of course, is where we get to an analogue of the situation with TV. TV channels are qualitatively different, in a similar way to rucksacks or cameras, as they show different programmes and differ in their schedules. BBC Three isn't just a clone of what's on E4 with a Mercedes rather than a BMW logo, it offers something different. And hence pragmatic concerns take priority over brand loyalty ("Well, I see a lot of BBC Three and don't watch much E4, but E4's showing Star Trek while BBC Three has something about fat kids whining. So I think I'll watch E4 instead"). Ah, that's it! Apple have cleverly used the success of the iPod to help raise their brand awareness, with the result that sales of their computers have increased. I noted something telling on the advert - one of the selling points raised was that playlists etc. followed the same format as on iPods (bloody annoying, too - Media Player had a much better system before Microsoft played copycat and adopted an Apple-like playlist system). While it's not a strict compatibility issue, as I touched on it's a way of selling Macs to iPod owners on the basis of practical convenience rather than branding. How does this relate to the DOG? TV companies are using DOGs to create branding and identity with their target audience. You may not like them (and for that matter neither do I) but I can understand the motivation behind them being used, So can I. I suspect, however, that the motivation is misguided as it's based on cloning what appears to be successful marketing in other media without understanding (a) the circumstances in which branding is most effective, and hence why it works, and (b) that different forms of branding suit different media. I've no objection at all to the BBC or any other channel trying to hype its products, but focusing on trying to sell channels to their viewers rather than programmes is misguided and I don't think it reflects the way most viewers consume this particular product. Incidentally, I missed responding to the first bit of your post before I chopped it, but when I've seen and used Macs in offices and libraries (all within the last ten years, and in one case last year), they've all had monitors like old-fashioned PCs, sometimes dayglo (though the last batch was white), and all the clumsy operating system with the slide bar at the bottom of the screen.
