Not quite pulling the plug on the business entirely. Pioneer is
reportedly transferring it's low black level and other plasma
technologies to Matsu****a (aka Panasonic) and will buy their panels
from Matsu****a. Pioneer will then add their electronics to the panels.
So Pioneer plasmas will still be available. So this could mean better
Panasonic plasmas in 2009, but likely not as good Pioneer plasmas. Too
bad, because Pioneer plasmas are currently the best flat panel HDTVs
available, period. They just did not have the capital to expand their
manufacturing & lower cost enough to compete with Panasonic & Samsung in
plasmas.

Likely to be a run to buy the current generation of Pioneer plasmas
before they shut down production. These could be collector items for
those who know their HD TVs.

I was just thinking that... Or there could be a fire sale, where one
might pick up a 50" Kuro for a song.

It was bound to happen.
The technology is just too expensive to compete in the long run.

Quite frankly, I expected the PDP contraction to come several years ago.
It is a tribute to the engineers that they were able to make the incredible
improvements in quality and cost that moved the date for the end of PDP to
beyond 2010.
