No HD during weather alerts

I'm watching the NBA finals. It is supposed to be but isn't, because of a
tornado watch which is displayed on the screen. Has anyone else experienced
this? It is quite disappointing because during bad weather, many of us would
be more likely to stay home and watch TV, especially if a big game is in HDTV!

I have seen it here in the Baltimore area. I *assume* this is because the
station(s) have yet to install equipment capable of superimposing crawls in
the HDTV stream, or do not have TWO separate systems -- one for analog, one
for HD -- to use during an alert.

A rational person would assume that alerting the public takes precedence.
(I don't include myself in that category. I want my HDTV come hell or high
water! g)

This is only because your local ABC station cannot key the weather
alert over HD. all of their graphics must be SD. So in order to show
you the alerts, they have no choice but to switch to the upconverted
output of standard master control.

It's a matter of $$ at this point. Until the station implements a
more sophisticated path for HD versus "pass through", it will be like
this.
