This set doesn't have a ATSC tuner for over the air digital. You can
get analog with it until those stations go away. For digital, you'll
need a set
top box tuner - one of the subsidized boxes will work.

================================
They will NOT work for providing an HD signal!

The OP said HD, not I. I only mentioned digital, which will work with
one of the subsidized boxes. If you had looked at the manual, you would
note the set isn't HD - HD isn't mentioned anywhere in the manual. It
appears to be a SD LCD, with a 4x3 display. A HD signal will be
displayed in SD, which is what one of the subsidized boxes will provide.

I probably should have mentioned the set was not HD in my original post.

I don't want to argue the point, but check the specs on the TV again. It
is an HDTV, without an ATSC tuner. A DTV converter box will work, but
won't give them HD. For HD, they need a regular ATSC receiver STB.

As for the rabbit ears argument. I haven't seen a set of rabbit ears
without a uhf loop in years. I think most people equate the term to also
include UHF. I know I do. Let's face it, it's not a technical term anyway.
But in the future I'm dropping it and will only use uhf/vhf set top
antenna from now on.

So they are providing subsidies for boxes that only will work with
some ATSC signals?

They'll work with all ATSC signals and will produce an analog NTSC
output. They can't magically provide HD video to an analog NTSC TV.

I didn't know they even built them.

To provide analog NTSC video for folks who haven't bought digital TVs
yet.

Actually, any box that qualifies for the subsidy cannot (by rule)
provide HD out. If one want HD, they have to get a box that doesn't
qualify for the subsidy.

From:

"The screen offers 480 x 640 (VGA) resolution."

"Aspect Ratio: 4:3 (Standard)
Resolution: 640 x 480 (VGA)"

And the manual never uses the term HD or high definition that I could
find. Looks like a 4x3 SD LCD set to me.

Correct, but it does give the resolution, and it's HD.

SPECIFICATIONS (LC-13B2UB)
Items Model LC-13B2UB
LCD panel 13” Advanced Super View & BLACK TFT LCD
Number of dots 921,600 dots VGA
Video color systems N358, N443, PAL, PAL-M, PAL-N, SECAM, PAL-60

Note the number of dots. 640x480=307,200. 1280x720=921,600. Also note that
it supports all Pal versions and Secam which require more than 640x480.
The screen is certainly 4:3 so I'm not sure how they utilized the dots,
but I assume the layout is close to 1200x800. Basically, it's one of the
older HD 4:3 sets like they used to sell in CRT form About that time
frame. In any case, it's certainly not an SDTV.

if her TV has an ATSC tuner then she could hook up with CS-102 HDTV/
DTV antenna.
This is a really good omni directional antenna that would enable her
to watch
free HDTV in her area. It gives sharp cystal clear images. She may
even connect the antenna
to her laptop if she has the tuner. Go get over at http://kowatec.com/

Number of 'dots'? Actually the number of 'dots' on a 'VGA' screen is
921,600 (each 'pixel' is a triad of 'dots'). Me thinks that there's a bit of
deceptive advertizing here.

Not if the image is mapped to the # of pixels.

Yes it is! (see above)

I also bought the CS-102 hdtv antenna from kowatec.com . It gives
perfect HD images.
It so amazing that a little antenna like that can capture such good
diginal signal.

Yep. I think you're right. I sure didn't expect this from Sharp. Guess
that's why they used dots instead of pixels.

My apologies to all. They duped me.
