I don't know whether anything about this has previously been posted on this
NG but an item in January's ERT Weekly states "Fury as indies denied first
sales of Freesat".

It then goes on to say.. "Independent retailers are angry that they will be
deliberately excluded from selling the new free-to-air satellite service
Freesat following its launch this spring.

Comet, Currys and John Lewis have been granted six months of exclusive
rights to stock the product, which is a result of a BBC/ITV collaboration to
provide more than 200 channels and free high definition content for a one
off payment with no contract or subscription.

Independent retailers will not be allowed to sell Freesat until September -
and then only if they are members of Euronics.

"We are disappointed and quite frankly astonished that independents have
been cut out of the supply chain for the first six months," said Bryan
Lovewell, chief executive of retailers or organisation Retra"....

God that sucks. My good friend Colin Bahain is a Euronics dealer and if
possible I would prefer to give him my business.
The stupidity is Colin is also a Sky main dealer so in the meantime he will
continue to offer his customers Freesat from Sky.
The BBC are stupid ****s.

200 channels now is it. But not Channel 4, 4+1, 5, E4, E4+1 More 4, Virgin,
Dave, etc. etc.

On their website they only claim 80 so that would be BBC1, 2, 3, 4, CBBC,
Cbeebies, News 24, ITV1, 2, 3, 4, 2+1, CITV, Film 4, along with QVC, The God
Channel and other rubbish like that.

http://www.flysat.com/28east.php/

You only get 200 if you count BBC London, BBC East (West), BBC East (South),
Anglia (West), Anglia (East) etc. etc. as separate channels.

No problem, IMHO it's part of what these groups should be all about... 'six
months of exclusive rights to stock the product'
ending in September, which would appear to indicate that launch day is now
pretty imminent.

It does make one wonder whether the chosen three are paying anything
to Freesat for the privilage.

And we all know the level of service given by at least two of them.
The third, of course, has hardly any outlets.

Anyway, is it really worth while bothering with Freesat until Ch 4 & 5
join? It's hardly an alternative to the Sky non subscription package,
apart from the eventual ability to schedule recordings when PVRs
become available for it.

I'd have thought this was illegal under EU competition rules.

Surely all it means that the bug ridden first generation Freesat boxes
will not be sold be the independent retailers?
