Default DAMN! GBH Drops PBS HD Channel

Just like that. WGBH in Boston was running the PBS HD channel on its 2.2 HD channel.
Now it just duplicates its 2.1 480i channel in the same 480i format. Well I suppose some
of the quality stuff like Nova and Nature will be in HD but lost are a lot of great programs
like Inside:_____ , Secrets of the Dead, etc. Man what a waste. The most painful part is
I can look forward to dreck like Suzi Orman, the Three Tenors, DoOp whatever and any
number of pacing guru infomercials. Welcome to the 'future'

I hope they will not drop it in the NYC area. This is what I am
watching most. I would drop my membership.

I said this a long time ago, and the (hopeful) crowd here booed me. (I
wasn't alone--others agreed.) The world will dump MORE channels of SD
rather than FEWER channels of HD, because here in America MORE IS
BETTER!

MORE CHANNELS! AMERICANS WANT MORE CHANNELS!

And you are still wrong. PBS will be dropping their SD feeds all together
in favor of HD. What's going on now is two feeds, and SD is going the way
of the dodo. You have no clue as to what's really going on.

My condolences, Rick. We've had it like this in Austin since Jan 2007.

Oh god, I hate that pacing guru crap during membership drive weeks. And
they think that will get MORE people to pledge? It's not like I've ever
seen it at any other time, so there can't be much demand for it.

Wow. So much for reading comprehension. You fail at it. Again.

Befo SD channel + HD channel, usually showing different stuff
After: SD channel + HD channel (or HD channel + analog channel here in
Austin), always showing the same stuff

How do you get "MORE CHANNELS" out of that?

Of course we want more channels *all else being equal*. But your
prediction continues to fly in the face of what is happening in the
Chicago market. Of the English language digital stations:

9 months ago Today
-------------------- ----------------
2.1 HD HD (CBS)
5.1 HD HD (NBC)
5.2 SD SD (weather)
7.1 HD HD (ABC)
7.2 SD SD (ABC news + talk)
7.3 SD SD (weather)
9.1 HD HD (WGN - independent)
9.2 SD HD (The Tube was replaced by a
multicast of 9.1, often in Spanish)
11.1 HD HD (PBS HD)
11.2 SD SD (WTTW - PBS)
11.3 SD SD (Create)
11.4 ---- SD (WTTW Spanish)
20.1 SD HD (WYCC - PBS)
20.2 ---- SD (WYCC SD simulcast)
20.3 ---- SD (MHZ Worldview)
26.1 SD HD (WCIU - independent.)
26.2 SD SD (METV - independent)
26.3 SD SD (Foreign Language channel replaced
by METV2 on 3/1/08)
26.6 ---- SD (Foreign Language channel moved
here)
32.1 HD HD (FOX)
38.1 SD SD (ION - independent)
38.2 SD SD (QUBO - ION kids)
38.3 SD SD (ION Life)
38.4 SD SD (ION Worship)
38.5 SD ---- (ION West is gone)
50.1 HD HD (WPWR - MY50 - independent)
56.1 SD SD (WYIN - PBS - going HD in 2008)
56.2 SD SD (Create)
62.1 SD SD (WJYS - independent)

So, what's the net result? 2 SD channels went HD. No HD channels
went SD. 4 SD subchannels were added. 2 SD subchannel was removed.
(9.2 dropped The Tube SD and became an HD multicast of 9.1) So, Jan
2007 saw 5 remaining SD only stations. Jan 2008 saw 3 remaining SD
stations. Of those 3, 1 has announced that it will go HD this year.
So, the trend definitely continues to be for OTA stations to go to HD
in the Chicago market. There is also a slight move towards more SD
subchannels. Unlike some, I don't try to tell you the future (since I
can't), I can only report what has happened.

Aren't they going to have their main channel in 1080i and give you HD if the program is
provided by PBS in HD?

Anyone who has been following PBS since DTV started will know that the national HD Channel,
which is mainly a showcase of HD content, would go away as the local affiliate stations moved
their main channel to HD. I suppose most will do that in the next year or so, if they
haven't already.

Yes, all their SD content will be likely upped to 1080i pillarbox during primetime just like
the commercial stations and you won't be able to see HD programs without pledge breaks when
they are fundraising like you may be able to now on the national HD channel.

And then there's the issue of how many subchannels they have and resulting increased
macroblocking with 1080i. Seems that PBS affilates like to have lots of subchannels in many
markets.

donation and enclose a suggestion to WGBH

When my net worth is as healthy as Warren Buffett's I'll be
happy to make a donation healthy enough to *influence* PBS
management. Meanwhile my regular reasonable pledge reserves
me the privelege to complain while not being naive enough to think
a *healthy* donation short of millions would have influence.
