Actually no, I don't. I've got a few extra bucks to play around with,
so why not?

With that kind of attitude, it must be inheritance...

No, not at all... a 42 year retirement and investment efforts have done
well. Even old farts like to have a little fun now and then.

Right.
And the farts are the best part.

Nobody caring is the best part, but there are penalties for streaking.

By next holiday season I think that BD-ROM Profile 2.0 drives with
Farajouda processors will likely be in the sub $300 range at black
friday sales, etc... At that point, I'll feel comfortable enough with
the maturity of the technology to make a purchase. Until then, DVD's
will do just fine.

Faroudja DCDi - there is no equal.

Hold your nose and buy a 40G Playstation 3. They are $425 delivered at Sony
Style and you get a $100 credit with a new Sony credit card plus 12 months
no interest. PlayStations are the ONLY Profile 2 upgradeable Blu Ray's
around. Buy anything else at near that price and you risk no upgradeability.
Forget about Dolby HD, though. PlayStations "don't play dat" and likely
never will...which the cheapest HD-DVD player already include.

Other benefit is that Sony supposedly loses money on PS3's and that is a
good thing as they sure deserve it.

I've gotten to the point of looking at Blue-Ray [since HD-DVD seems to
have lost], and sticker shock hits me once again. I don't think I'd even
consider a purchase until prices drop to $300 range. I have to believe
I"m a typical consumer who has to consider budgets for these things.

Now that the tech war between HD-TV and Blue-Ray seems to be decided [or
is it?], is there any prognosis of prices coming down and how soon?
Producers can jump in with both feet now...right?

I have to say, the bigger screens are nice and flatness and all, but the
real 'jump out and grab you' NEW character of this technology that
justifies the expense doesn't really start until you take advantage of the
full 1080 pixelation. That means Blue-Ray, right? I think I may have been
about a year too early to get into this.

Thoughts and comments?

Well put. If ever a format deserved to die it is Blu Ray.

Prices are falling, mass market adoption will occur by the start of
the next decade, in a similar timeframe that occurred with DVD.

Good, you just confirmed that people need to stay away from this BetaRay
stuff for at least another two years from now. Until then hopefully HD
downloads will be a reality and you can then stuff your beloved format up
your butt.

You know what I think Blu Ray deserves? To receive bad publicity all over
the net, pointing all its flaws on all possible forums and venues, to keep
people away from buying into it. The kind of FUD campaign Sony waged against
HD-DVD from day 1 (just look up "Project Hydra").

Too bad Toshiba and Microsoft underestimated that kind of impact, and too
bad Toshiba did not have the balls to subsidize the Xbox HD-DVD add-on the
same way Sony did with their PS3, and too bad marketing was handled in the
HD-DVD camp by incompetent people. You can bet this anti-consumer crap that
BetaRay is would have not "won" without this string of failures. They
practically handed it to Sony.

Oh yeah, $399 is "under 400", right? And, can we all say, "profile 1.0 crap
being cleared out?"

OTOH Panasonic just sent out a s/w upgrade for my BD player. Burned it
to a CD and plopped it in the machine and went to bed. Upgraded it
while I slept (per the instructions this took about 15 minutes). (Fixed
an issue with LFE and some other minor thing).

When the profile is upgraded, Panasonic will (per a sheet included with
the machine) have another update available for it.

Face it, BluRay won. High bandwidth DL (with equivalent quality to BD
or HD-DVD) is practically 5 or more years away (in the US/Canada).

So, get on the BD bandwagon and enjoy 1080p in style.

As more manufacturers focus on BD, prices will cool.

Cheers,
Alan

The disk prices won't.

Yes they will. Sony has already created a process that will allow BluRay
disks to be made on existing DVD lines.

profile 1.0 crap? I'm confused... my 1.0 player is working just fine.

Long live Sony and the BDA. The consumer "has chosen"!

And pocket the difference.

What difference?
