People seem to forget that there is still another HD player option, HD-
VMD. And while it's a newcomer and just started shipping about a month
ago, at least it's a finished product. And MSRP is $210 for it's top of
line model, and $199 for the standard model.

VMD is DOA - and that's not to say it is not a good format, that is to
say the pseudo capitalist economy we live in isn't going to allow any
competition.

matters not though - now we have one high definition format that
nobody cares about, instead of two. Its the same war DVDA and Super
Audio discs fought - and both lost.

That said - buy a PS3, before Sony ups the price, its an amazing
hardware value for the money, and up samples DVDs to almost HD quality
to boot.

I think you'll find the price of both will drop like a rocket in a few
months

Possibly, but Sony is likely to push the limits to what the market
will support. If there is an increase in demand you can bet they will
keep prices up. They are not noted for having the end users best
interests at heart or having much of an opinion of such. Just remember
the "root kit" and their CEO's remarks about the consumer's level of
intelligence.

Sony paid $400,000,000 to Warner to drop HD-DVD (After Dawn web site). You
think that will lead to price drops in players which they already make
nothing on?

True enough. I held my nose and ordered a PlayStation 3 this week only
because of the $100 rebate promotion SonyStyle`was running. I loathe Sony,
but they did win (via bribery) and I also felt obliged to add to their
corporate losses on the PlayStation. Will rent Blu Rays from NetFlix to try
to minimize Sony profits. Will buy none.

Congrats, Sony. The scum won, but what can one do?

VMD isn't dead by a long shot. VMD is a technology, not a disc format. it
can also be used with HD-DVD or Blu-ray to increase storage capacity.
NME's current HD player uses VMD and red laser, not blue laser and it
supports up to a 20 layer disc making th emax capacity for red laser about
100GB. I guess that would be about 500GB with blue laser.

matters not though - now we have one high definition format that nobody

I have no need for a PS3, Blu-ray, VMD HD player or HD-DVD player. I must
admit I was tempted to buy an $89 HD-DVD player with 7 free movies though.
But after some thought, came to my senses. I've got a DVD player in all my
myth boxes and never use them now. I do own 3 DVD's though. All were
gifts.:-)
