Default Need help connecting HDTV, cable box and surround-sound receiver

I'm having a devil of a time making the right corrections and hope
someone can help me or point me to a site that might have some clear
instructions on how to solve my problem. I have a Philips HDTV (mod#
42PFL5332D), a Comcast cable box (a Motorola mod# DCT5100) and a
Magnavox DVD Digital Home Theater System (mod# MRD-200). I have the
component cables (Y Pb Pr) going from the cable box to the HDTV and
the red/white audio cables going from the cable box to the home
theater system and it works great for TV, but I can't get the DVD
player to show the video on the TV. Everything else works fine (i.e.
AM/FM, CD's, etc), but they are only audio, so I'm thinking I'm either
missing a video connection or have something wrong? Any help would be
greatly appreciated. Thanks

From your description there is no video connecting the Home Theater
system to the TV. I am not knowledgeable about your theater system.
Ideally the theatre system should accept all signal sources (video +
audio) and the only connection to the TV is from the outputs of the
theater system. The Theatre system needs to switch between the cable
box and DVD player.

Use the optical or co-ax output of the 5100 to go to the receiver input.
I'm not familiar with your model (other than it is an all in one model), so
you need to see if there are any digital inputs you can use.

From a picture I'm guessing there are 2 S/PDIF "coax" inputs.

What output are you using from the DVD to what input on the TV ?

Seems that is what's missing. I believe the TV has 2 Component inputs
(AV1 and AV2). Use the free one to connect from MRD-200.

I looked at the Magnavox manual online. Unfortunately that model does
not look like it has any optical or coaxial inputs, so you can't
really enjoy true surround from the cable box. The way you have it
hooked up now is fine .
Does the cable box have an HDMI connector? If it does, you can go from
the cable box to the TV, so you can have sound out of the TV, and
still use the audio jacks from the cable box to the surround system.
But when I looked online, it did not seem the box had HDMI, unless I'm
looking at a old manual.

If this HT in a box system has a component video or HDMI out, connect
that to the TV. Go to the DVD setup menu in the HT and if using
component, set it for progressive scan, if available. Also, set it for
the proper aspect ratio for your TV.

Just like to comment that Dolby Surround encoded sound (that usually
is broadcast with film material using the 2 "stereo" channels, either
analogue or digital) gives indeed "true surround" sound after decoding
with for example Dolby Prologic (IIx Cinema if you have the option).

A common misunderstanding is that this is a "fake" surround.

Admittedly channel separation and quality can be higher with discrete
multichannel like Dolby Digital 5.1 but Dolby Surround can still be
good..

Problem solved, thanks to Dave Wolfe. All I needed to do was to
connect a component cable from the HT to the AV2 connections on the
back of the TV, and use the TV as the "switch". It's working
perfectly now, so a big public "Thank You" to Dave and everyone else
who helped me through this issue!
