Default HUMAX PVR - inaccurate recording starts.

....snip...
All useful info, thanks.

If you don't have SL set do recordings with AR start properly?

Not always, no. As I explained, according the my Hummy, none of the "Five"
(Five, Five US, Five Life)stations carry SL but the Hummy still failed to
start recording "Without a Trace" correctly despite using AR. I only lost a
second or two but that was enough to annoy me. And even on CBBC which uses
SL (Raven), some programs start "a touch before" and some "a touch too
late".

Any connection with channel 4 with SL working OK for me I wonder?

I still can't even get EPG for BBC4 unless I am actually on BBC4 for a
while so i can't set it to record anything.

Maybe I should set BBC4 as my default channel for when it auto starts
in the afternoon before I get home and see if it updates the EPG on
that channel.

Are series links set automatically? i can't seem to find a control for
turning it on or off when I see the icon

Firstly, I presume you're on the latest and greatest firmware. If so then
selecting an SL program to record should result in a popup asking if you
want to record the entire series or just this episode. If it doesn't then
there is no series link. The BBC seems to use them (try Raven on CBBC) but
Five doesn't. Don't know about the others as I haven't checked.

As to downloading the EPG, it is irritatingly slow from any channel. Humax
recommend watching BBC1 and having ITV1 as picture-in-picture so you're
downloading from two stations at once. Personally I just turn it on and
leave it for a long time!

I've found the latest firmware populates the EPG quicker - but that
might be wishful thinking.

iirc, the channels appear with subtly different colours in the EPG,
depending on what services are supported.

Subtle! And when the NHS provide a cure for my slight colour blindness,
I'll be able to tell them apart :-(.

When the new software was received automatically, I got a message
telling me that it would be necessary to re-initialise, and that
I would loose my stored settings, but not programmes. I did
nothing, but yet the new colours show in the EPG.

Perhaps someone will tell us what you lost by not initializing.

As someone who works with comms. software that has to be able to update and
"just work", I was very disappointed to find that the stored settings were
lost. That is totally unacceptable in the sphere in which I work, although
to be fair we're talking big-bucks software and not "for free" updates.

I believe that the new software is installed automatically. If you check the
relevant screen, you will find that you have version 1.00.21.

I think you *should* do a 'default setting', or you may have problems later.

Yes, One thing you'll probably find isn't working correctly
will be the new recording features like Accurate Recording and
Series Link... At least, this was the case with the previous
upgrade, where the first version introduced a buglet which was
corrected with an updated release. No restart and the buglet
wasn't seen.

SW upgrades may be using an area on the hard disk for saved
information. A new upgrade may change the format of that
information, so it would be reading incorrect locations for
its data.

I installed .20 (which was never pushed out over the air) and after a
few days I found the behaviour of the box a bit odd - the fan would run
when on stand-by, etc. I then did the reset that I should have done
after the install. It was as good as gold after.

I received .21 when it was broadcast and haven't noticed any unwanted
side effects since (think I did a reset to be sure).
