Default pro-bowl picture quality

Did anyone else think that the picture quality of the pro-bowl was poor?

It almost looked like they were using the SD camera.

This was in Dallas, FOX channel 4.1.

They were using sd cameras. It was widescreen 480i.

Same thing here in NY Metro, we got widescreen SD. Apparently they either
don't have the extra HD cameras in Hawaii or their weren't any facilities
that could transmit the HD signals to the mainland.

Ditto San Diego (Fox affiliate XETV-DT 6.1 in
Tijuana). Tried both CoxCable and OTA -- same
result.

One camera was excellent but most were lousy.
Quality wasn't even up to garden-variety (home
shopping show) SD standards. Those images had
trailing edge shadows around bright objects.

There's plenty of bandwidth from the Palm
Fringed Island to the Mainland. However; it
costs money. Rupert Murdoch is involved ....

No, it is not just the cameras or bandwidth. The major cost is
shipping a HD capable production truck or trucks to Hawaii for one game.
Cameras are a only part of what is involved in putting together a live
sports broadcast, be it SD or HD. For the 2008 season, the NFL will
require that all regular season games be in HD. Don't know whether this
will extend to the Pro Bowl; that may depend on the network broadcasting
the game deciding to go to the expense of airlifting a HD capable
production facility to Hawaii.

Thanks for the post. I thought Fox's video feed for the game stunk too. I hope
that by next year, Fox gets on board and goes 1080i. I know, I've read it hear
that 720p is HiDef. But Fox makes enough money to jump into the present.

I suggest you go read some on the subject before you 'trash talk' a
major network. There are pros and cons in all choices and they took
the 720 route which is reputed to be better for fast action - like the
NFL and NASCAR.

I'm sure you made similar judgements when you bought your gear and
there is _somebody_ here who thinks you made a poor decision. You made
yours and they made theirs. Now go enjoy your HDTV.

720p has close to the same temporal data rate as 1080i. There are
tradeoffs to both, but they are both HD. Period.

Fox is not going to switch to 1080i in the foreseeable future. They
have too much invested in 720p equipment and distribution. It is not
just Fox broadcast networks but the Fox backed My Network is 720p, the
Fox sport nets are 720p, their cable channels are 720p - FX HD, Fox
Business Network HD. The 720p on Fox is generally not as good as the
720p on ESPN-HD and ESPN2-HD, but Fox has made choices in their
distribution system that limit the network HD feed to a ~15 Mb/sec data
rate and that is not going to get changed any time soon. There are
almost certainly improvements at the production end that Fox could make
to improve picture quality, but HD picture quality has obviously never
been the priority at Fox that it has been at CBS for example.

I figured since they did the Giants/Dolphins game in London in HD,
they would do the same for Hawaii.
