In an actual TV station (like Granada)

But Granada is not a TV station anymore.

Apart from the regional tittle-tattle program, it is all done from the
South Bank now, is it not?

Granadaland continuity and playout comes from the South Bank, ads from Leeds.
Regional news is still from Quay St, but routed to Winter Hill via Leeds.

AIUI South Bank and Leeds are shortly to be replaced by a new playout centre
in Chiswick, serving all English ITV regions, HTV Wales, and Border.

Not quite - the southern playout operation is moving from the South Bank to
Chiswick but Leeds is being refurbished.

Thanks for the correction. Will Leeds be temporally shut down for the refurb,
or will it continue to operate ?

That I don't know. I'm just going by the various press releases that I've
seen around.

But the zener bodge is no more. This very morning I was inside the very
scart switching box that I'd modified for that very purpose for the
purpose of repurposing it for some other purpose. Oh dear, I seem to
have come over all Count Arthur Strong now.

Oh and wasn't it funny when he had problems with his mobile phone? Hil said
he sounded just like me when I have my periodic arguments with (a) O2 and
(b) my phone.

would it not be better to treat the
inter-programme adverts as belong to the following programme not the one
just finished? That way the recording would have adverts at the start,
forcing people to either watch them or fast-forward past them.

Correct for some purposes, but you neglect the theory on which people
watch which adverts. The broadcasters' theory is that the adverts between
programmes are watched by the people who watched the /previous/ programme
and just haven't stopped watching yet: too distracted to turn off or ten
over. This the reason that ending credits have diminished in the last ten
years or so: they gave people time enough to realise that the programme
was over and change channel.

In reality, in these days of stress and multi-tasking, people are more
alert than that. What they actually do it turn on early so as not to miss
the beginning of the programme. And with so much available on TV and
recorded, there's always something else to watch afterwards. So they're
more likely to see the adverts before the programme than after it.

Why the broadcasters haven't realised this yet is beyond me. Yet it's
obvious they haven't since it's the adverts after the programme that are
the same as the ones during it.

In reference to the precision of timing, it would be possible for most
broadcasters to be accurate to the minute in EPG times, but not to the
second: broadcasters no longer make the adverts or programmes broadcast on
their channels and their lengths can vary.

Simon.

So is STV definitely excluded then? At one time there was rumour of
them joining too.

STV for the moment remain independent (though they are part of SMG that owns
what was Grampian). They've just moved into a building on Pacific Quay, and
have new playout facility there. Not that that would worry the beancounters if
they should get gobbled up by ITV Ltd (aka Carlton/Granada).
