All,
Just got a Humax 9200 and had the time to start setting it up. It's just had the FTA Freeview Playback update but I know enough not to get too excited. So I try to record CSI on Five, 21:00 every Tuesday. Hurrah, it seems to have the FP start/end tags; boo it doesn't have FP series link. So now I have two options: 1. Every week I can set a new reservation (timed recording) and then the Hummy will figure out the correct start/end time or... 2. I can set a single reservation and flag it to "record every week", at which point the Hummy ignores the start/end flags. Presumably the start/end tags are tied to a single specific episode of CSI. Freeview Playback is never going to fly until the broadcasters start using it properly. I have suggested that Humax roll out "Freeview Playback+" whereby the software makes an educated guess that "CSI next Tuesday" is "series linked" to "CSI this week" based on the hints I provided (like "record every week please"). That's a possible sticking-plaster but what is clearly wanted is for broadcasters to get on board. By comparison I have no trouble recording Raven on CBBC for my children because the BBC have taken the trouble to set all the appropriate FP flags. Paul DS |

Paul DS You just have to accept, for now, that Five and others are not using series link and so you have to use the other facilities of the Hummy to record a series. -- Wilf |

I know that, you know that, the masses won't and FP will be disclaimed as a total failure all because it was not rolled out properly. Paul DS. |

I was impressed that Virgin 1 uses at least some of FP correctly it seems. Last night I tried scheduling a recording which clashed with 2 other recordings, the Humax said so and said something like "Do I want to record the alternative programme" at which point it changed the recording of The Unit from, I think 9pm Wednesday to 8pm another day. I was surprised that Virgin used some of these features - as I see it as a bit of an obscure channel compared to the likes of BBC etc. D |

Given the length of time it takes to get bugs/updates from the manufacturers tested and released surely the easiest point of pressure would be the broadcasters rather than hundreds of manufacturers tweaking their products? If the manufacturers start doing, then the broadcasters(ok some particular broadcasters) will just spend even less time trying to actually provide up to date accurate/info. I'm surprised that the regulators haven't actually started looking into it more. Surely a 'standard' that is released(I assume it's optional rather than mandatory is the fallback stance) should be able to lobby for braodcasters to actually adhere to the benefitof the consumer. None of C4's range of identikit, timeshifted, space-hogging channels do, and ITV, one of the organisations that pushed for FP in the first place, haven't bothered either. Paul. |

I've been using Freeview Playback successfully to record the ER series on Thursday nights on More 4 -- Wilf |

There are several weeks old threads on Digital Spy - Usenet for Dummies
;-) on this topic. I think Series Link has mixed blessings. Try to record only each Wednesday BBC2 9pm Torchwood programme, for example. You can't. Thanks to SL every variant in the week is recorded, included the dumbed down kiddies version at 7pm! Richard |

That has everything to do with broadcasters misusing it and nothing to do with SL per se. Each variant should be a series of its own. Personal judgement as to whether that is better or worse than no SL at all ;-). Paul DS. |
