I think that half
the population have no idea just how difficult it will be to record from
an STB (or even realise that there is a problem). It will be possible to
operate *some* analogue VCRs and analogue DVDRs directly from the STB's
Electronic programme Guide because the recorder responds to a switching
signal, but success in getting that working is hit-and-miss.

Only if they have timers linked to the EPG. I've got an old Goodmans STB
where the timers are independent of the EPG as the 7-day EPG was a software
update.

Many VCRs can be set using VideoPlus, but the STB will have to be left on
the right channel, and I expect listing mags will stop VideoPlus soon after
DSO.

As VCRs fail, most people who want to record will gravitate to DVD recorders
I imagine as the nearest available equivalent, and more and more of them
have digital tuners.

Her daughter gave her a DVD player last Christmas, same result, it

If it's rented, presumably the rental company will change it for an
iDTV at some point.

There website says:

Do I need to change my TV?

No, you don't need to change your TV, you can simply update it by
adding a digital set top box to it.

Looks like, not only will they not give you a new TV, they won't even
give you the STB.

Dave was talking about the rental company.

You're right. Don't be afraid to name and shame, though. After a quick
websearch, I see that the residuum of Radio Rentals and Granada Rentals
is the online company Box Clever. They actually want 50p/week for the
STB. Scumbags!

http://www.boxclever.co.uk

God knows how they intend to get new custom, though. I can't figure out
how to get any of the rental prices for their TVs. I tried going partway
through the order process and even that didn't work. Looks like they
only tell you the price *after* you've placed the order.

AFAIK this particular company are a finance company who took over
rental of a few now defunct rental firms. Their main customer base is
with those in the poverty trap and the TV they supply to them have a
pay per view box attached (hence their name) via which they can also
pay for other goods and services. My neighbour, however, isn't such a
person, has no pre payment box, she just failed to get rid of her
rented telly years ago as most people did.

what sort of person pays 11 quid a month for a basic TV when you can buy one
for 99 pounds (or less)?

A surprisingly huge number of people, who set up the rental agreement
donkey's-years ago, and had forgotten all about it by the following
week.
