Why do people keep referring to "tuning" via scart leads?

Because usage can transcend the original, literal meaning of a word, I'd
imagine.

People talk about 'tuning in' in many non-literal senses. I don't need to
give examples I'm sure.

For the same reason they refer to "filming" things with video cameras.

Incorrect. There is a single lead connecting the Virgin box to the DVD
recorder - a scart lead. I'm selecting the channel I want to watch on
the
Virgin box. I'm selecting the channel I want to record on the DVD
recorder.

I don't think I've ever heard of a tuner signal being carried by
scart.

so what model recorder was this again?

I'm not sure - it's not mine, but a friend's which I installed. I tried
plugging in the aerial but the recorder failed to find any channels when
it
did an autoscan. So then I plugged the Virgin V+ box in to the recorder
via
the scart lead, rescanned, and the recorder detected all the digital
channels available via the Virgin STB.

No offence, but, i'd *love* to see how that worked.....

Quite quickly and very easily. I'm assuming that there is 2-way
communication between the Virgin box and the DVD recorder, that the channels
available from Virgin were sent via the scart lead to the DVD recorder. And
when the EPG is accessed via the DVD recorder, it is accessing it via one of
the Virgin box's tuners.

Nope. You said that the DVD recorder found all the channels from the
Virgin STB? The digital tuner built in to the recorder has NOTHING to
do with that. There is no sort of compatibility because the of the
builtin freeview tuner. THAT is what Aggy (and everyone else
disagreeing with you) is pointing out to you. It may be that the DVD
recorder is controlling channel selection of the Virgin box on the
'video' SCART channel, but again, that has nothing to do with the
freeview tuner that is on board the recorder.

Tell us what the DVD recorder IS and maybe we'll understand what
you're trying to tell us.....

All makes it very easy to record. Instead of setting the DVD recorder to
being recording a particular channel at a particular time, and either
leaving the Virgin box tuned to a particular channel or having to programme
it to switch over at appropriate times, all you have to do is highlight the
programme you want to record and the DVD recorder takes care of both its
operation and the Virgin box simultaneously.

OK. I think I understand what you're getting at. But, at the risk of
repeating myself, this has NOTHING to do with the fact that the DVD
recorder has a builtin freeview receiver.

Again what is the make/model of the DVD recorder?

Yorkshire's *in* the north east! Otherwise it would be called
Lincolnshire or Lancashire. :-)

I've heard Geordies refer to the inhabitants of Stockton and
Middlesbrough as "southerners", so I guess it must be relative.

And then there are the Londoners. Some of them seem to think you have
to watch out for dragons if you venture outside the M25, and somewhere
north of Watford you fall off the edge of the world....

You really are determined to remain in your blissful ignorance
aren't you?

So if the channel that the DVD is recording is not coming via the
Virgin box, where do you think it comes from? Out of the ether?

You snipped the part where I explained what's going on. Which part(s)
of it did you disagree with?

You haven't explained anything yet. Also you haven't told us the make and
model of the DVD recorder.

Look at the IGNORANT talking about things he knows nothing about. How is a
video recorder with a digital tuner which picks up Freeview going to enable
you to watch another channel on Sky or Virgin. Just because it's got a
digital tuner doesn't mean it will give you cable or satellite capability if
all the tuner picks up is Freeview.

You are talking COMPLETE AND UTTER NONSENSE!

You are talking out of your ARSE as usual.

I understand that its open-armed stance has inspired the locals to call it
the "Flasher of the North".

Here in Liverpool the same artist has given us some rusty men looking out
to sea, but I'm not aware of them having a nickname. I just hink of them as
"the Gormleys".

Dunno about you, but to me the north-east is Middlesborough and above, as
far as Berwick. A long way from here.
