I dont know about the Toshiba. But on my new LG dual player only the
HDMI output has the surround encoded audio signal. The TOS output
only contains a regular stereo PCM 44.1khz (CD) signal. So in my case
my receiver needs to get the audio from the HDMI wire and not the
optical line. So you cant always count on the TOS optical output
being nothing more than a tape monitor output it seems. Problem is I
now have to go buy a new receiver and relegate my pre-HDMI receiver to
other duties around the house.

I have the Toshiba HD-A1, which was the earliest and less expensive player.
I use the optical digital audio output to my receiver which decodes the
surround, also reading and displaying other info, such as "DTS." The real
question is, will there be any HD-DVD discs to buy a year from now? I
hedged my bets and bought blu-ray as well.

===============================
Conventional DVD players have no amp.
Speakers cannot be hooked up directly
to ANY of them!

What did you mean to ask?

I don't know what he meant to ask but I am wondering if you need an
HDMI input on your amplifier to handle the output of a Blu-ray or HD
DVD player? Or do they also have optical and RCA L/R jacks.

After further research (like bothering to read the manual) I have
found that my post above is in error and I want to correct it in
fairness to LG.

The optical audio output on this player DOES send all the DTS encoded
information, it's just that, out of the box, it defaults to just
sending regular PCM CD audio.

To get it to send the DTS audio you have to go into the audio setup
menu and select it, duh. Now I am listening to glorious 7.1 DTS and
it is phenominal, I dont know if I like the picture on my JVC-RS1
projector or the audio better from my Paradigm/Denon system. Also I
found that the video defaults to 1080i, to get it to send 1080p you
have to go into video setup and select it. The audi sampling rate
also defaults to 48k so if your receiver has a 192k 24bit DAC then
you'll want to set the LG to 192k sampling rate. After my wife heard
the surrond sound last night the wife acceptance factor has gone way
up over all the time I've put into getting this system in place. For
those who "poo poo" the audio side of your systems and are listening
through crappy 2 inch Bose cubes or something similar, you really need
to hear what THX surrond sound is like with full-range-bass surrounds
and multiple sub woofers (phased for node cancelling).

Absolutely! And for those with picky neighbors, I recommend starting up
a "free movie night" and let them hear why it's such a pleasure to have
a home setup like this.

So the A-3 and A-30 are marked down at my local Circuit City
(Washington DC metropolitan area). They're each $100 off of the
regular price, so the sale price is $299 and $399 respectively.

The associate I spoke to said they're still selling even at that
price.

He said they're going to go down soon.

Weird.

On a conventional DVD player, you just need the 5 speakers/1 woofer,
and you're ready to set up your theater system. I'm also puzzled that
you say the speakers aren't hooked up to the conventional DVD
player....just to clarify, I was talking about the small rl, rr, fr,
fl, c & woofer set-up, not conventional stereo speakers.

Is there a way to do that with the HD-DVD player, or do I have to buy
an entire amplifier?
