My mate's got a couple of Ferrographs. Amazing sound quality.

I had a Ferrograph 4A when I was a teenager: salvaged from the dump.
Worked very well.
Weighed a ton.

Had 3 honking great motors: one for each reel, and one for the capstan.
A single large rotary control for the main functions.

Ah, I've found a photo....

My parents always groaned when I arrived home with another piece of salvaged
electronic junk!

Had the same problem with my parents. I collected reel to reels for a
while.

And this was in a skip too!!!......

You *******! I'd love to find one of them in a skip. Think my mates
got a very similar one he uses for mastering, when he has an analogue
moment.

Lots of these sort of tape machines were just junked. They had little
value when the 'digital revolution' came along and were too large to store.

A pal came across a Nagra 4S in a skip - and it had spent all its life in
a dubbing suite for transcription purposes so was in mint condition.

Of course now such survivors are getting rarer they command a reasonable
price.

I had the same problem - with harmoniums. Maybe they had a point - they
are bigger than Ferrographs.

As I used to repair Nagras for a living from '69 to '74 I have a
fondness for them. I have a III, a 4D, 4L, 4Stereo-TC, SN, 2 off
T-Audio and a D (records onto a hard disk in a caddy)

Here is one of my T-Audios

Seriously, do you know the best way to find a good home for a harmonuium?
I rescued one from a fate worse than death from my neighbour before he
moved out, but I can't play the thing and it takes up quite a bit of room
in my hall. I've seen a few on Ebay, which is what I might end up trying,
but I really have no idea what I'm dealing with. It works, but is quite
battered and should really go to somebody who can restore it properly. Are
there specialist websites for harmonium enthusiasts?

There sheer size is a probem. My mate's runs a recording studio and
has also got a 4 track 1" machine, 8 track 1" and a 24 track 2". The
24 track is bloody huge and bloody heavy (a 4 man lift). Thing is,
tape is so expensive, he rarely uses them, but the 'young metal kids'
that tend to go there think they look cool.

My mate (who's an obsessive collector of keyboards) has a harmonium.
I might use it on my next album.

Thames TV ordered a load of T-Audios just after they came out. And none of
the first few supplied worked properly. (They were bought as effectively
audio only VTR machines). They were returned and the order cancelled.
Studer A 812s were purchased instead. Never did find out just what the
truth of the matter was.

Vast amounts of 2" tape went in the skip where I used to work. Nobody
wanted it. Afga PEM 468.
