I had a Ferrograph 4A when I was a teenager: salvaged from the dump. Worked very well. Weighed a ton. Had 3 honking great motors: one for each reel, and one for the capstan. They had little value when the 'digital revolution' came along and were too large to store. A pal came across a Nagra 4S in a skip - and it had spent all its life in a dubbing suite for transcription purposes so was in mint condition. Of course now such survivors are getting rarer they command a reasonable price. -- *Money isn‘t everything, but it sure keeps the kids in touch Dave Plowman London SW To e-mail, change noise into sound. |

I had the same problem - with harmoniums. Maybe they had a point - they* are bigger than Ferrographs. Seriously, do you know the best way to find a good home for a harmonuium? I rescued one from a fate worse than death from my neighbour before he moved out, but I can't play the thing and it takes up quite a bit of room in my hall. I've seen a few on Ebay, which is what I might end up trying, but I really have no idea what I'm dealing with. It works, but is quite battered and should really go to somebody who can restore it properly. Are there specialist websites for harmonium enthusiasts? Rod. |

My mate's runs a recording studio and has also got a 4 track 1" machine, 8 track 1" and a 24 track 2". The 24 track is bloody huge and bloody heavy (a 4 man lift). Thing is, tape is so expensive, he rarely uses them, but the 'young metal kids' that tend to go there think they look cool. Marky P. |

And none of the first few supplied worked properly. (They were bought as effectively audio only VTR machines). They were returned and the order cancelled. Studer A 812s were purchased instead.
