Default HD choices

I've recently come into a little money and I'm thinking about getting
into HD.

For the tv, for viewing at about 8 feet, I might stretch to a 40" LCD,
perhaps the Sony 40W2000, available for about £900 incl. I know about
the "clouding" issue, but given the other advantages of this model, it
looks worth the risk.

I'm undecided between Sony's S300 dvd player (£250), or a 40GB PS3
(£280). I'm not a games player, but having the option is ok, and the
auto-upgrading over wifi is good, especially given the recent news
about the limitations of other Blu-Ray players.

Re broadcast, I'm not keen on Sky and more-or-less decided to go for
BBC/ITV Freesat. I have a Humax 8000T pvr just now and like it, so
will probably replace it with the new Humax Freesat box when it's
available.

I'm not in a hurry -- or at least I'm trying hard to contain my
enthusiasm so as to make the best decisions -- and might not get any
of these until Freesat is up-and-running.

Any comments?

Be careful. The W2000 I don't think supports 24p ? which if you intend to
watch movies from BluRay (or HD-DVD) is more or less essential (IMHO).

There seems no mention of it in the specs:-

http://www.sony.co.uk/view/ShowProduct.action?product=KDL-40W2000&productsku=KDL40W2000U&site=odw_en_GB&page Type=TechnicalSpecs&imageType=Main&category=TVP+32-40+Sony+BRAVIA+TV#tab

Or http://tinyurl.com/2wexkf

The W2000 has been superceded by the W3000, which I have, although its current
price is rather more than £900. The W3000 does support 24p.

I wouldn't waste your money on LCD. Wait a few months for the LED and SED
TVs coming on to the market. Shops are refusing to stock them until people
have bought all the stockpiled LCD TVs.
That's why LCD prices are dropping every week.
Why buy something with smearing and clouding? Why buy something that isn't
up to the job?

I'm undecided between Sony's S300 dvd player (£250), or a 40GB PS3

Is it really worth it for a couple of films? You will need sky.

Waste of money buying it for a name when there are Freesat boxes about now.
You will not get HD on that or freeview.

Yes, where have you been lately, freesat is already up and running! It's a
waste of time as you need to buy a viewing card for some channels and there
will never be any HD.
If you have come in to money, buy some decent equipment. SKY HD to start,
then one of the new LED/SED TVs. All the benefits of the superior quality
of CRT in a flat screen! No ghosting or smearing, no clouded effects and
black is black!

OK, looks like it's back to the drawing board. Don't know whether I
can justify the price of the W3000.

I'm a surround sound virgin, I'm afraid -- literally don't know what
I'm missing. I've got quite a nice stereo, though! :-)

Seriously though folks, I'm not into action films, so would I gain
much from surround sound?

Yeah, right. I know very little about all this but the responses of
others in this group when you've said that before have convinced me
that you're an idiot. Though your responses to Bill W would have had
the same effect on their own.

if playing blu rays is what you want, the ps3 seems to be the best choice
right now - it's getting updates and will play your movies at 24fps 1080p -
which is what you should be aiming for.
its madness to pay more for a standalone player at this moment in time.\

The sound through a mediocre amplifier and speakers is likely to be ten
times better than that can be obtained from most TVs alone.

It's not just action films that benefit from the intelligent use of
surround sound. I would recommend surround sound to go with your
system.

Yes, you would, for most films theses days.
