Default Freeview via one off payment Query?

Enough to make you wonder who is putting money into some of the rubbish. I
mean we are getting rubbish on freeview, but its nothing compared to what
you get from a satellite!

As Freeview will not be available in my area until 2010 I am considering
getting Freeview by paying a one off payment to install a satellite dish.
Could someone explain what hardware is involved.
In other words apart from the dish do I have a setup box as well ? If so
do
I have to have separate setup boxes for each TV I own?
I have no wish to have one of the Sky packages.

On a typical dish installation You have a dish with an LNB on it, a
cable linking it to a box and anotehr cable from box to TV. You select
the channels on the box,not the TV . For non-subscrption Tv (and
radio) the box might be a 'sky box' in which case it will give you the
free channels including 4 and 5 ("free to view"), or it might be
another type of "free to air" box which will give you the free
channels exccept 4 and 5.

the box only outputs one channel at a time and it comes out either on
a scart cable or (for some of them but not all) on an 'aerial' type
cable that goes into an conventional analgue tv or video recorder
aerial input.

You cannot watch different channels on different TVs with a 'single
box' system like this. nor is it asy to simply connect more boxes
onto one dish output. This is becayse the box sends commands to the
dish about which polarisation to use. two boxes cannot both command
one dish iunless it has a special 'multiple output' LNB.

You will get hundreds of channels and find nothing worth watching on
98% of them.

Its paid for by the advertisers, and in the end nobody is making
you watch television Brian, so if you don't like what your
watching, either turn it over and watch something different, read
a book or go out.

Some larger retailers (Currys/Comet??) are offering a deal (from Sky) which
comprises FreesatFromSky (free STB + installation) *PLUS* 4 months of Sky
subscription (to 4 "Mixes") - all for £75 - there is NO committment to keep
the subscription after this point.

Very hard to beat!

I can't find anything about this on either Currys or Comet website. On
Dixons it says sold out, more available from November! Are you sure
this is available now?

Seems to be sold old on the Dixons web-site (as you say!). I am sure that
I saw it on display a couple of weeks ago at my local Currys.digital
(ex-Dixons) store.

I have found it (and it appears to have stock and be "available for
collection" at my local store!) at www.argos.co.uk. Argos item code

OK, thanks for that, though for reasons I won't bore you with I've
decided not to go for it.

What a bargain, as long as you read conditions and watch if you have to
cancel the subscrition of £19 per month at the appropiate time.

You would be hard put to get a new terrestrial aerial for that price!
How on earth is the BBC/ITV freesat going to compete with that?

Seems a very negative attitude to take towards constructive criticism, James ?
Is there a reason for that ?

By letting people have a PVR without paying a £10/month subscription.

By allowing CAMs to be made which will integrate into other compatible
equipment.

By advertising it every hour on every BBC channel.

However, for many people, none of this will matter, and they will go
with the proven, currently cheaper, Sky system.

Cheers,
David.

I haven't seen anyone mention the obvious: there are channels on
Freeview that are not available on Freesatfromsky. More still that
won't make it (immediataly) onto Freeview from the BBC and others.

There are even more channels on free satellite that are not available
on Freeview, but to many people these channels are of little or no
value.

FTA=works with all boxes
FTV=only works with Sky box with card (inc. Freesat card)
