Sky HD boxes to get new EPG this year

Wednesday, January 16 2008, 10:08 GMT

By James Welsh, International Editor

Sky has confirmed that its high definition boxes will get a new
version of electronic programme guide software this year.

Details of the new guide software first emerged in November, and at
that time it was understood that newer Sky+ and Sky HD boxes would be
upgraded. Now Sky has confirmed that only HD boxes will receive the
upgrade.

The current 4 top level options (TV Guide, Box Office, Services and
Interactive) are to be replaced with 10 options, in which television,
radio and interactive services will be listed separately. Other
alterations including a 1/8th size mini-TV display showing video from
channels as they are selected in the TV Guide are also planned.

Sky has told broadcasters that it "expects to introduce a new version
of its EPG software for HD set top boxes at some time during 2008".

It added: "The new version of the EPG software will have separate
menus for television channels (the TV Guide menu), radio stations (the
Radio menu) and interactive services (the Interactive menu)."

just hope it doesn't wipe out the already programmed shows.
it would be nice if it took advantage of HD resolution and typical screen
size to fit more than a couple of hours of shows onscreen at once.

It would be nice if they would build on the groundbreaking work they did
for the blind viewer with audio description available before anyone else,
and make the menus talk so we can actually use them.

And, maybe for us who do not need flippy flappy woman, to have the option to
remove them from the channel stream.

No mention of increased functionality. I have recently moved to skyhd. Sky+
and the epg are terrible. I use my tivo to schedule all the shows, and use
it as i did before. Whenever a hd channel is recorded i have a record signal
sent to the skyhd box to make sure it is recorded in hd. Slightly clumsy,
but sky+ functionality is laughable.

No, but I am sure you feel all warm and fuzzy inside saying it. The signing
of shows is extremely irritating, and only done because OfCom mandate it.
Nothing wrong with having signing as an interactive option, and then we all
wont have to put up with it.

even the music channels are forced to do it.
just the other night i saw such a thing - superimposed over a pop video was
a fat woman wearing gaudy clothing.
not only was she signing to the song, she was doing some kind of bizarre
convulsive dance to go with it!
