Ah, very good. One interesting thing is there is slight overscan on my Bravia
LCD, so somewhere between the TV's tuner and screen something's not quite
right with the upscalling.

Someone who is far more adept with Photoshop than I produced an HD version of
Test Card W for me, on a .psd file 1920 x 1080. If I stick that into my PS3,
and display with everything set to 1080, the result is rather nice.

The aliasing effects are mainly due to the camera and screen beating, and are
far lower in real life.

That's cool. I presume that the jaggies were created by whatever
resizing process that you used to convert the horizontal pixels from 720
to 1024 so that it appeared square in the GIF image?

I can't get to the test card, but I do get the status page mentioned.

Rock and Roll! Works fine on my 2003/4(?) Thomson DTI1000 - thanks for
link.

It's a function of the third party program I loaded onto my Topfield PVR
to perform the screen captures. Setting the Topfield for a 4:3 aspect
ratio changes the behaviour of the screen capture program and it then
gives a 720x576 image - the

page has been updated to show this alternative image.

Cool. Do you have a lossless PSD-PNG version by any chance, rather than
jpg?

I saved the .psd as a .png within Photoshop, but I don't think that will be
lossless ?

The frequency gratings are a very rough approximation to sine waves, work is
continuing to get a far more accurate representation.

Of course the test card is BBC/Ofcom copyright, so it would be rather naughty
to stick the file up on my webspace. If anyone is interested drop me a mail by
decoding my real email address from the info in my signature and header.

What about that awful effort Sky are putting out in HD, did they have to
seek permission
to use it? Did they find their own clown, or did they Photoshop it from the
original?

IIRC. The clown belongs to Carol Hersey, not the BBC.

Unlike little Ern's wig, you can definitely see the join where they pasted
the new face in.

FWIW, doesn't work on an old Ferguson FDT500 STB. I can get to the status
page but the test card never appears.
