Default where's the WOW!

I just set up my Panasonic TH-50PX77U and don't see any "wow" when
watching HD. The picture looks beautiful, though. My current HDTV is
a 34" tube that is amazing in HD...maybe the shows last night were not
shot in HD, but upscaled for HD broadcast?

There was a show about the Blue Angels that looked really nice, but
again...no WOW factor.

I just purchased the Toshiba REGZA 32HL67U. Out of the box it looked
very good. After I tweaked the settings the WOW factor came into play.
Most sets need to be tweaked to get the best picture. I don't know what
settings the Panasonic has so it's hard to advise you there. You might
try one of the AVS forums and compare calibration setting there.

I'm not sure I understand. Presumably you *had* been watching HD
content on a very fine HDTV. Now you are watching HD content on a
very fine HDTV. Are you expecting the picture to be much better on
the new set? That's pretty unlikely since you started with a good
HDTV. Larger, sure, but noticeably better? Unlikely. Is that what
you mean by "WOW factor"? Or do you mean that your new set is poorer
than the old? If that's the case, I suspect you need to do a little
tuning of the new set.

That's what most people say about HD compared to a nice progressive scan DVD
player in 640P or even Standard defenition.

It's just not a big deal and not worth the money. 99% of consumers just
don't seem to care.

Wow! Only 1% care about HD!!! I feel so special!!! For years, my buds
and I have been doing movie nights and spilling beer on the sofa at one
place or another. Now that I have an HD player setup, we always come
here to spill beer on my sofa. I feel sooooo special!!

I don't think that's true.

I've read countless reports of consumers getting home with a new HDTV set
and being underwhelmed, falsely expecting *all* TV to be in HD and
therefore being greatly disappointed. So perhaps this group is the "99%"
you refer to.

I suspect most new HD viewers are still tuning in SD programs, not knowing
they need to do something besides plugging it in.

I've got another lean on all this. Boredom sucks.
I've watched movies until I grow sick, knowing all the formulas and plot
thickeners like the back of my hand. Special effects used to float my boat,
but they too have become blase'....yawn. Too many effects movies play like
cartoons now since computers can come up with most anything in our
imagination. "Plan 9 from Outer Space" at one time, excited movie goers.
I'm afraid I'm now at that point in our present state of the art where it
all looks stale, unlifelike....dumb....objects swinging from string-like
characterization.

I'm jaded.

I went through a DVD period where I bought recorders, put together camcorder
videos, spliced up my own concoctions for family and friends...while trading
hobby artifacts among friends who shared the interest. I've got a
collection of movies on DVD that amaze me, not that I watch any. Just a
hobby. It was like pulling teeth compared to VCR...but fun...for a time
anyway.

But then, I'm jaded. It is very rare to see a new movie come out worth the
price of a ticket. It seems we've reached that part of the movie making
curve where things flatten out and tend toward infinity; it's all been done
before. Yawn.

I have something like 100 subscribed channels on my satellite TV...and I
scan back and forth for something that excites me. I usually just fall
asleep.

I'm jaded. Bored.

But here comes along a new technology in HDTV that will revamp the entire
scope of home viewing, and we are off to the races again. Oh, not like the
excitement I once felt, but something at least. I'm researching the
products again, perusing the ads and trends, waiting for markets to
stabalize so I can begin to learn the new latest and greatest methods
of...uh...'the same old thing'?

I realize it is all a boondoggle...a corporate scheme to get my money...me
the cow upon which their milk is assuaged from my 'tit' wallet. But...it's
something.

I'm jaded and I'm the product of corporate consumerism where the human soul
is trashed and human relationships become like wet tissue paper, leaving us
'addicts' of material plastic and shiny objects off production lines. I've
resisted HDTV until recently. It's a stupid thing really. Who really needs
it? I don't.
Especially at the prices.

But...I need something to fill my time and a new fix to make my emptiness
just a little more tolerable...at least for a time.

So...yea for HDTV!!!

Gee!
Maybe getting a life would help.
