Rod. Don't knock it til you've tried it. Your comments are completely inconsistent with my experience...though I acknowledge all my PC hardware is new....and that I have had to purchase a new scanner due to lack of proper Vista support. D |

[snip full list] You're very lucky. One of a very lucky minority I suspect. And I'm not even running the new system on old harware, just a new Core Duo with 2GB memory, which ought to be pretty good. I haven't had any blue screens yet, but it has an annoying habit of freezing with a pale screen, or refusing to shut down properly so that after five minutes or so I get fed up and switch off at the wall. The most annoying incompatibility was a very expensive Wacom graphics tablet which wouldn't work, and for which the makers have no plans to issue updated drivers. They told me it would be ridiculous to do this for something that was "only" 9 years old! I ended up having to buy a more recent graphics tablet, but despite finding a cheaper secondhand one on Ebay, I shouldn't have had to buy one at all as the old one was in perfect condition. I've kept many things a great deal longer than 9 years without having to replace them. Typing the first letters of program names is no big deal. I've had Ctrl-Alt keyboard shortcuts for my most used programs for many years, and as for that 3D pages floating in space gimmick, all it really does is exactly what Alt-Tab has always done. Frankly I'd gladly forego the special effects for something simpler that always works. Rod. |

I'd be interested to know why you're sure this is due to Vista. From what you say there, it could be other software or even hardware-related. I've kept many things a great deal longer than 9 years without having to replace them. Not computer-related things, I'd bet. That's just the way of the world, these days. And if you really want somebody to blame, the tablet maker should get it before Vista does. Typing the first letters of program names is no big deal. I've had Ctrl-Alt keyboard shortcuts for my most used programs for many years, and as for that 3D pages floating in space gimmick, all it really does is exactly what Alt-Tab has always done. I'd be interested to know why you're sure this is due to Vista. From what you say there, it could be other software or even hardware-related. It could be, but the operating system is the only significant thing which is different from the previous computer. The hardware is a new motherboard and CPU with plenty of memory, just as I've used on dozens of other computers I've built. I have mostly the same software set up and used in the same way as before. It's all supposed to be compatible. The main moot point of course is - if it was "software related" would it be the software that was incompatible with Vista, or Vista that was incompatible with the software? There are plenty of opportunities for different manufacturers to blame each other, but I can't help inclining to the view that if something becomes worse immediately following a change, then culpability belongs with the thing that has changed.
