It appears that everybody is eligible but why would you want a converter box for a VCR? A cheap ATSC tuner for your computer is so much better than a VCR. If you have enough money for the computer to write this on, you shouldn't need a government handout for TV. Or are you entitled? No, not everyone is eligible. If have any pay TV service, you household is not eligible, even if you have TV's without a tuner not connected to them. Your household has to be free of any pay service to be eligible for any coupons. Where are there cheap ATSC tuners with drivers that run on a reasonably stable operating system (Windows doesn't count)? Also, I want to watch TV on a *TELEVISION SET*, not a computer monitor. I've looked at things like MythTV, and found it extremely lacking in terms of supported hardware requirements (not that it didn't support stuff: it didn't tell you what it supported in a way you could actually buy at a store). BS. I paid under $20 each for my last 2 ATSC PCI tuner cards. I now have 6 in my mythtv system. And while there's a PC monitor on this machine, my master backend server, both other frontend machines are connected to HDTV's. And I've run mythtv on many different machines without a problem. It's just a linux app. If the machine will run Linux, it'll run mythtv. Now includes any x86 compatible machine made in the last 5 years. Want to know what to buy, just ask almost anywhere, including here. Or you could search the web or even got to the mythtv.org website. There's links there you can follow to get to hardware compatibility list. There's no differnce in watching Tv through a PC than there is watching it through a vcr, dvd palyer, Tivo or any other device that connects to the TV. And there's also plenty of people oin the alt.video.ptv.mythtv newsgroup willing to help you. I've even given free phone support. And if you don't like linux, there lots of programs on the windows side of things, but I can't help you with that. I don't do windows. G-squared can though. After using MythTV, I'd never go back to a consumer grade DVR. -- Want the ultimate in free OTA SD/HDTV Recorder? http://mythtv.org My Tivo Experience http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/tivo.htm Tivo HD/S3 compared http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/mythtivo.htm AMD cpu help http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/cpu.php |

Wes will likely give you a list of MythTV compatible hardware since he's the MythTV guru. I wouldn't call myself a guru by a long shot, but I can get things working. From the FAQ on the dtv2009 site: 7. Are all consumers eligible for the coupon program? Yes, but supplies are limited. There are 22.25 million coupons available to all U.S. households. Once those coupons have been used, there are an additional 11.25 million coupons available only to households that solely receive their TV broadcasts over-the-air using an antenna. Households with TVs connected to cable, satellite or other pay TV service are not eligible for this second batch of coupons. Consumers can apply for coupons until March 31, 2009, or until the funds are exhausted. Has anyone check the first box in the app been able to apply for coupons. Thought I tried that and it said I wasn't eligible. Of course this was on Jan 1 about 3am. When I first tried at 1AM, I got a server error from them.:-) -- Want the ultimate in free OTA SD/HDTV Recorder? http://mythtv.org My Tivo Experience http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/tivo.htm Tivo HD/S3 compared http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/mythtivo.htm AMD cpu help http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/cpu.php |

Not true, they are required to include a remote. Remote for what? The convertor box? I wouldn't think that it needs one, its like just daisy chaining something to your tv. The channel changing happens on your tv/remote, and the convertor just lets you additional channels on the same tv/remote. -- "... respect, all good works are not done by only good folk. I would have thought it would have been close to what my USB HD tv tuner, which is about 2 inches long, and 1/2 inch thick. If Hauppauge(and others) were able to get it this small, I would have thought the guvmint would use something like that. Maybe not that small, fine, but it accepts the signal and displays it on the tube tv and the lcd tv both. The only remote I use is the one that came w/ the tvs'. I would also have thought that to make it simpler, the folks making the boxes would do something like that as well. -- "... respect, all good works are not done by only good folk.
