Default Why should I get a 1080p?

Why should I get an HD TV with 1080p resolution if...

1. I will not be buying an HD-DVD or Blu Ray player anytime in the
next several years.
2. I will not be buying a PS3 or any other HD video game system.
3. I have not found any evidence that suggests there will be any
content broadcasted in 1080p in the USA anytime soon.

So is there any reason I should get a 1080p?

Thank you in advance.

As opposed to what, 1080i, or 720p?

I haven't decided between 1080i or 720p. I was hoping to rule out
1080p first. I don't watch a ton of sports, so I am leaning towards
1080i. But like I said, I'm not sure yet.

Thanks.

Well, there are very few "1080i" native resolution sets these days.
CRTs and the Hitachu ALiS plasmas are the only ones that come to mind.
The choice is true 720p, 768p (many so-called 720p LCDs and 50" plasmas
are actually 1333x768), or 1080p. LCDs, all plasmas other than the
Hitachis, DLP RPTV, LCOS RPTV are all progressive displays, not interlaced.

The choice should not really based on whether you are thinking of
getting a HD-DVD or Blu-ray player, but on the screen size, your sitting
distance, cost, picture quality (color, black level, lack of motion
smear). Even for a 50" screen, at a typical living/rec room sitting
distance of 9' or 10', you will be hard pressed to see the difference
between screen with 1366x768 versus 1920x1080 pixels. If you are getting
a 40" to 46" size screen, a 720p or 768p resolution screen is fine. At
50", 1920x1080 does not buy that much, but it does fall into the
category of nice to have if it does not break the budget. At 58", 60" or
bigger, then I would recommend to go with the native 1080p display.

Remember all HD TVs will scale the input to the native resolution of
the screen. They take 480i, 720p, 1080i input and scale it up or down.
Some support 1080/24p input from HDMI, some still do not.

Would there be a consideration around which input size most
programs would be and how well that size scales to either 1080 or
768?

Or do all the sizes scale to either screen equally well?

My decision was to get a 720p now (1366x768 32"), planning to buy
another in about five years, or whenever the technology changes for
the better.

Nope. Unless maybe you plan on getting a really big screen. Both my HDTV's
are cheap 768P sets. 27" $399, 37" $599. Both have excellent pictures. For
the money ($599) I was really impressed with the Envision 37".

Per the dog from that film you saw:

Will 1080i be the most common format for over-the-air?
