Default Mits RPTV takes a power surge - how bad can it be?

I have a 4 1/2 year-old Mitsubishi VS-50805 which has been great. Due
to all of the small children at my house it runs all day, every day
and it has never had a problem.

Last night we had a storm and the power blinked on and off a couple of
times. I have the power cord running through a surge protector, but I
didn't run the incoming cable through the surge unit because it
degraded the picture. I guess there was a surge through the cable
because when I turned the tv back on after the last electricity
flicker the picture was way off. The guns are definitely out of
convergence - way out, and the screen in pinched vertically in the
center (like and hourglass laying on it's side). I tried to manually
adjust the convergence throught the advanced menu. There was no
problem getting to the convergence screens, but the adjusment actions
weren't having any effect on the lines. I also tried the "restore to
factory convergence" option. It says that the action was completed,
but it had no effect.

A Mits-certified tech is coming next Thursday and I'd like to know
what to expect. Any of you have a diagnosis, and possible cost? The
tech is travelling about 25 miles. The service call is $150.00, plus
whatever needs to be done. Does that sound about right?

Thanks in advance,
Nick

The service call rate seems a bit high, but it depends on the market and
what the charges are for the repair. The problem likely has nothing to do
with the power fluctuation. You most likely have either a bad solder joint
on the vertical convergence output amp IC or that IC is defective. It could
be other things but this would be the most common repair with this symptom.
The IC is a STK392-040 and should be $30-40, depending on the supplier used
and the servicer's mark-up. Labor can vary wildly. On a 25 mile one way
call our charge would be $70-90 for the trip and labor would be $120-170,
depending on the exact repair required for most things related to
convergence. These rates are relatively low compared to the averages
nationwide in the US.
