There already is free over-the-air digital broadcasts. What you need is a digital-set-top-box to received them with your rabbit ears or antenna. All my current TV viewing is done in this manner. |

There is plenty of free over the air digital broadcast TV right now. You need an ATSC tuner and a antenna. Not all full power stations are broadcasting at full power on the digital channel, but according to the FCC, 1635 stations are now broadcasting a digital signal. If you want to see what digital stations are in your area, go to antennaweb.org, enter your zip code or address and add some feet to the antenna height under options to get a more complete list. I get 17 digital stations over the air - 13 of them with an HD sub-channel - and can get several more if I re-aim the antenna (but these are mostly duplicate network stations so I don't bother). ALL digital OTA programming is free and it is available right now if you are within range of a digital station. If you need a converter box for your analog TVs the government will help you buy two of them with the $40 coupons they are giving away. Visit their website at http://dtv2009.gov -- Bill R. Because there's minimal OTH HD and no pure just-digital (SD) OTH signals available. :-/ http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/ |

Our Mitsubishi gets over the air HD from our 40 year old roof top antenna. Better image than what we get from Cox cable, too. -- Jitterbug phones: Fourth one is in hand. Doesn't work. Yet. ![]() |

There is plenty of free over the air digital broadcast TV right now. You need an ATSC tuner and a antenna. In fact, the advent of digital TV is prompting many people who've been relying on cable or satellite for many years to run out and buy antennas. And in some cases, from postings I've read on Usenet, they're dropping their existing service providers. So rather than requiring people to get cable, digital TV is actually luring some people *away* from it. Although I occasionally wish that I could pick up my local PBS station's five digital feeds, so far I haven't wanted it badly enough to go out and buy a converter and an antenna. Patty |
