Default Silly Idea?

Quick question, is the content of an encrypted MPG stream any different
from the content of a clear stream from a technical point of view? I.E.
could you use a cheap digital PVR to record an encrypted stream without
it complaining and then be able to stream it back via whatever CAM is
required to allow access/viewing? I've got a daft idea rolling around in
the back of my mind s'all...

The last post on this page seems to confirm at least the toppy does what
you have written.

Er isn't this what $ky do? (so you need to have the card to view recorded
content).

Ahh, do they? If that's the case for Sky+ then that sounds worth
investigating further. Has anyone tried swapping hard drives from one +
box to another? Would be interesting to see where they tap the stream. I
may have to find my screwdrivers this weekend.

Unless $ky are dafter than I think the solution will be integrated and the
unencrypted stream will only exist within a single chip, so you would need
so very expensive gear to get it out.

Ahh, I agree totally, I'd suspect they are a *lot* smarter than me. But
I'm not after tapping a decrypted stream, I'm thinking of replaying an
encrypted stream past a CAM with a valid card and not actually for Sky
(initially) anyway. I suspect that the tuner in the box will spit out an
MPEG stream which I may be able to feed into a 'standard' DTTV I've got
some embedded LINUX boxes I can use for this anyway...

Plain SKY boxes (not Sky+ or SKD HD) have a PCMCIA shaped
connector underneath that is concealed by two screws. This
connector provides the decrypted MPEG stream. If you order
a service manual from PACE this contains a schematic that
shows the pinouts of this connector.

Another method is to use a Dragon CAM to decrypt the stream.

Nick.

Ahh, very interesting, thanks.
