Default Easy to use PVR?

Recently purchased a combined DVD player/VCR for my mother. However unlike her old VCR it doesn't
have VideoPlus and she is having difficulty setting up timed recordings manually.

I was wondering if a PVR would be simpler, and if so what one(s)?

Thanks

Most machines with digital tuners (if not all) can be set to record by
just selecting to record the program from the program guide. Of course
some people will find the idea of an electronic program guide
daunting, but I would say it was far easier than videoplus.

Is that record immediately or add a timed event?

Doesn't really matter if it's easier than VideoPlus, but whether it's much easier than manually
setting timer recordings.

well i don't use mine much as I have sky+ but as far as I know if you
choose record on an item which is being shown presently, or on an item
to be shown later it will record the item. I would guess that
depending on how long the program guide is will effect this, but I'm
not sure if there are any which are not seven days.

Hopefully someone who uses them more will fill us in one details :O)

Think of it like a TVtimes and picking out everything you want recorded and
marking it off. That's what it's like on the screen, you pick each
programme you want to record and leave it. Everything will be stored ready
to watch. Some will allow you to pick a whole batch of programmes so you
could do Coronation Street and keep the episodes together.
The fault with a lot of units is that the instructions are written by the
designer - so they tell you how it works rather than how to work it! I am
sure people will comment on which is easiest to use. Most of us don't care
how they work but want a simple interface to use. There is a huge market
for this but manufacturers ignore it.

Ultimately that depends on the PVR but either is possible. As mention in
the above thread it would be best to get a PVR that supports Freeview
Playback as explained http://www.toppy.org.uk/static/FreeviewPlayback.shtml

I have just bought a Humax and it has taken a bit of getting used to but
it is a fantastic device.

If Mum can programme a VCR then she can use this - you just have to get
your head around it being a slightly different animal and then it's a
breeze. And it is a million time better than a VCR!

My Mum can't program a VCR, that's why I've got her a Digihome DTR80 today. Chose it because of its
user-friendliness.

Considering a Humax or Topfield for myself.

Not necessarily. What could be easier than pressing 4 - 8 buttons on a
remote, pointing it at a recorder, and pressing "send" (or however the OP's
mother does it at present)?

I have a Hummy, and although same-day programming is simple, if you want
something 6 days ahead, it takes quite a bit of effort (not to mention the
well-known delay in the Hummy populating its EPG - which it loses as soon as
it is switched off).

yeah, I would say it's always going to be a personal thing. i find it
so easy to look for a program and press a red button on sky+
