Default Hollywood Reporter: 2008 - Blu-ray blows away HD DVD

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/...906b3ecd?imw=Y

2008 is the year Sony's Howard Stringer and the Blu-ray Disc will slay
HD DVD as effectively as Joseph Turok dispenses with dinosaurs. If
you're unfamiliar with that metaphor, you probably don't have a
PlayStation 3.

Every PS3 console sold in the U.S. comes equipped with a Blu-ray DVD
player. That's an advantage that has put the Sony device in about 2.7
million U.S. homes, compared with fewer than 750,000 for HD DVD. Blu-
ray movies also outsell HD DVD movies in Europe by a 3-to-1 margin.
This despite HD DVD players costing less than half the price of a PS3/
Blu-ray combo unit. True, Paramount, DreamWorks and DreamWorks
Animation recently joined Universal in exclusively embracing HD DVD.
But those decisions stemmed from a $150 million "incentive payment"
that smacked of desperation.

To truly understand Blu-ray's dominance, compare titles that are
available in both formats. Warner Bros.' "300" is the best-selling
next-gen DVD, and Blu-ray boasts an advantage of 66% to 34% over HD
DVD in sales of the title.

The final stake in HD DVD's heart could come from Blockbuster, which
is testing both formats. "It's still about 70%-30% in favor of Blu-ray
at our stores that offer both," a Blockbuster spokeswoman says.

Dual players are expensive, and a recent Forrester Research study
suggests that 22% of Americans say they will not buy a next-gen player
until one format wins over the other. Couple that with the 25% who say
they'll never buy a next-gen player, and the incentives are in place
for Hollywood to finally stop confusing the consumer with one too many
choices.

Ahhh, yes. Yet another of HDDVD's death knells is sounding. Seems like
it was at the very beginning of the two formats that these death knells
started. What's that? About 2 years?

I'm in neither camp,. waiting out the war... So let's bring some
common sense to this. Your numbers suck, for one.

Of COURSE Blu-ray will be 2:1 in sales for "300" since the players
outnumber HD-DVD about 3.5:1. So really, per player, 300 is selling
more on the HD-DVD format.

And OF COURSE blockbuster customers will favor blu-ray 70-30, since,
hey look at this, it's pretty close to the ratio of the players that
are out there.

Consumers have no clue as to what is "better". The player cost may
outweight the titles, or the titles may outweigh the player cost. But
for this is su Went into a Best Buy today, and saw the 6' of rack
space for each format, at $35 a pop, these things aren't going
anywhere anytime soon.

My only question is why post the link and then the whole damn article? And
cross post it at that.:-(

BTW, I will never be buying any HD player. Or SD player for that matter.

Cross post removed.

This is not the only thing Blu-Ray is blowing away. It seams they are
blowing Blu-Ray away as well!;-)

Why don't You see the writings on the wall:

Region codes are unpopular.
DRM protection is unpopular
Sony is in an economical crisis.
Hollywood is american heartblood.
HD-DVD is american heartblood.
HD-DVD players are cheaper
HD-DVD production is cheaper.
HD-DVD has DVD on one side(people with ordinary players can allready buy.
DVD can be stripped easily)
Sony is seen as an invador trying to bully americans.

But what about sales??:
Amazon.co.uk now nearly has no new HD-DVD's left on sale, whereas Blu-Ray
can still be bought! It seams that HD-DVD has an upgoing sales curve.

But what about the american Amazon?
Amazon.com:
705 HD-DVD titles.
609 Blu-Ray titles.

I see the writing on the wall:
"Mene-mene tekel ufarsin"
You have been weiged on the scales, and you have been found to be too

especially agreed for standalone players

agreed that Amazon seems to be selling
all their HD-DVD disks as fast as they
get them. i placed an order for several
HD-DVD disks a couple of weeks ago, and
Amazon informed me that it wouldn't show
up until sometime *after* Xmas.

But what about the american Amazon?
Amazon.com:
705 HD-DVD titles.
609 Blu-Ray titles.

interesting # of titles for each format

when this ninphan dude posts about either
BD or HD-DVD, you know he's going to be
over the top in favor of BD

me, i bought a Toshiba A35.

my 1st free 5 disks have already
proven the value of HD disks
(either format)

the one standout is the HD-DVD
copy of Pride and Prejudice (2005),
which has Dolby TrueHD

my future disk purchases will
have to have either TrueHD sound,
or the DTS equivalent

What are you doin' hanging around the HDTV newsgroup if you don't own
a DVD player? Not snarkin', just askin'. Seems incongruous to me.
Despite the advent of HD formats (of which I support Blu Ray), I'm
still impressed with DVD, and that cost of entry is so low today, at
around $30, that I don't know anybody who doesn't have a DVD player.

I didn't know owning a n HD DVD player was a prerequisite. In fact I see
nothing about DVD in the newsgroup name, just hdtv. I switched to ATSC
over 2 years ago and have been watching and recording HDTV ever since. I
do have internal DVD writers in the PC's connected to all my TV/monitors,
but I rarely use them. I mostly hang out here to keep up with the
technology and offer help and options to others moving from SD to HDTV. I
just don't consider DVD players to be a big part in that.
