I see very few comments, in reviews of LCD HDTVs, of how well they
satisfy viewers, looking at them off center. Do any perform well when viewed from a 45 degree angle from right in front of the set? Is the LCD the only kind of TV with this problem? |

When shopping recently I recall seeing what I think were LCD sets that were good from off angles, but I'd suggest you look at the one you're interested in "in person" from the angles you're interested in. They may be different. We got a Panasonic Plasma that looks about the same from even extreme angles side to side or from the bottom (physically couldn't check looking from the ceiling, but wasn't worried about that angle. :-). Think this is pretty much typical for plasmas. |

Roughly there are different LCD technologies and each has it's strengths and weaknesses. Some of these naturally have wider viewing angles. I have a 42-inch Sharp Aquos HDTV which has a terrific picture, but only if viewed from within the sweetspot. At 45-degrees left or right, there is significant washing out of the picture. |

As I have seen it, all the good brands of direct-view LCDs do just fine at 45 degrees off angle viewing. Is the LCD the only kind of TV with this problem? No, the LCD doesn't have a problem with this. Rear projectors generally do have problems like this, however. Alan |

According to http://www.sharpusa.com/products/Mod...8,1761,00.html , the Sharp LC-42D62U, has viewing angles of 176º H x 176º V which I think means it can be viewed at an 88 degree angle from direct on.. I wonder how they came up with those numbers. Apparently, no manufacturer gives you the angle where the picture starts to wash out. |

I'm surprised the effect seems so much more pronounced at home than it did in the stores. Y'know, I have my tv on a low stand, in the stores they are almost always high. Is it possible LCDs have a better horizontal viewing angle from below? I was admiring the image on what must have been a plasma tv at a restaurant yesterday. Much better viewing angle. It's about a 42" screen. I'm very happy with my LCD, but I'm starting to see the point about plasma. And since I only wanted a 32" screen, I didn't really have much of a choice. J. |

That is interesting--I had the same thought about how the stores display screens higher than normal eye height. Plasma screens have their drawbacks, too--more power consumption, running hotter, burn-in, reflections off the glass front of the screen, dimming over time... |
