I purchased a computer online on 12/14/2007. I live in Alaska but
wanted my daughter to pick up the computer and software in Wayne, New Jersey. My daughter teaches school in New Jersey and needed the computer before the weekend so I thought she could pick it up at the store. I called Circuit City and got someone in manila (I asked) and explained the situation. They said it would be up to the store. So I tried to call the store and after going through about 6 of those press this number or that I finally got someone that said to call back and press 0 for customer service. I called back and pressed 0 and got some girl that put me on hold. I called back again and asked for the store manager and again was put on hold. I called my daughter in New Jersey and she said her Mom lived right next to the store and she would try to pick up the computer. So the next day (Saturday) I called the store five times and five times customer service placed me on hold or hung up. My x-wife was at the store at the time and she called me and said there was no way she could pick up the computer and that I would have to cancel the order and wire her the money. So I cancelled the order and wired her $1400 using Western Union. She bought the computer using the very same order that I had done online. The store tried to charge her $29 instead of the $19 on the order for the wireless mouse and they left the Microsoft Office $149 software out of the bag and she caught it so they then said they had forgotten the software. Now the bummer. The original order was paid for by debit card and the money was given to Circuit City as shown in my online bank record. It now has been 7 days and they still have my money for the canceled order. I called yesterday and again got some guy in Manila who said the money for the canceled order would not go back into my bank account for 2 to 5 business days and that they still have until tomorrow, Friday to put the money back in. Funny how they can immediately take the money, but have to wait a week to put the money back. Do Not Buy From Circuit City! I making this post all over the Internet to teach these bums a lesson. |

I happen to know the intimate details of credit card processing, including debit card processing. It is not CC that keeps the hold on your card that long, it is the credit card company. Maybe CC should file a lawsuit against you for slander and malicious false accusations. |

You should have checked about the arrangements BEFORE you purchased the computer. By the way, credit cards have more safeguards than debit cards. Thumper |

Debit cards are "ultra cash" You need to read some of the alarming articles about debit cards, the most recent of which appears in Consumer Reports. Like the lady that reserved some rooms at a hotel using a debit card with one of those phony credit card logos. The hotel placed a hold on $580, which sucked out her checking account into overdraft-land. Then, the bank slaps big overdraft fees on her. Or, the lady who keeps small balances in her checking account. She swipes her debit card at a gas station and the station places a $75 hold on her purchase. She ended up buying $25 worth of gas. The hold was released the next day, after she enter overdraft-land with all the fun charges. Or, the man who used a debit card at a crooked gas station that captured his card number and PIN, and was able to duplicate his card and go off on a spending spree because he had (past tense, big time) a big balance in his checking account. Then, there is the not insignificant fact that federal law offers far less consumer protection on debit cards than on real credit cards. Plus, when something goes wrong with a credit card you still have the money while you argue (unless you are stupid enough to have an automatic debit payment arrangement for your credit card ;-) ) Many people who can't handle credit have sought credit counseling, paid off their credit cards and closed them. In turn, they use debit cards, which they are constantly having go into overdraft-land. Their annual overdraft fees and panelties end up being more than their previous terrible annual credit card interest, fees, and penalties. |

I know many people who ran up significant penalties because a debit card will let you spend money above your balance and charge you a $39 overdraft fee. Most of these people thought that the computer would just refuse the transaction if you didn't have enough money in your account. With cash when your pocket is empty it's empty. Thumper |

Well most of this reads as the same warning the guy spreading this spam should listen to. Buyer beware and read the fine print. ALL hotels place a hold against debit cards for the length of the stay. Buyer beware. Read the fine print. What fine print would that be? It isn't a debit card policy. It's a hotel policy and they have never volunteered that info unless asked. Thumper With the cost of gas going so high many stations are placing holds against debit cards due to not getting there $$. Buyer beware. Read the fine print. Nothing is to stop people from taking your credit card number and going hog wild with it anytime you hand it to a waiter or use it in public. No PIN code needed. I did not read anything above that made me believe the 'debit card system' itself is at fault. Seems all on the user if you ask me. |

Thumper Isn't this again the fault of the user for not knowing how much money he has? No. For instance, many employers are now paying their help by direct depositing into an account at a bank of the employer's choosing. They have their employees sign up and they receive a debit card. Many of these employees are students etc. How would they know that they can withdraw money from an account with no money in it? It used to be that you had to sign up for overdraw protection. Not the debit cards fault? Many credit cards will also let you charge over limit, happily applying fees as you go. How many banks would let you walk in and withdraw money from an empty account? The problem is that Debit cards are also ATM cards. They don't check your balance before they give you money. At the very least they should automatically check your balance. Thumper |
