Default Warning about Circuit City

I bought a notebook sony yesterday online for $1378 total for my
daughter in New Jersey. When she went to the store to pick it up they
would not give it to her. I called their sales office and got someone
in Manila that could hardly speak english. They said it was up to the
store. The store damanded to see the credit card. I told them I live
in Alaska and that would be difficult to do. I had to cancel the
order and wire the money down and that cost $99 via western union.
Circuit city already got the money according to my bank for the online
sales, Circuit city tells me I will get my money back in 2 to 7 days
for the online cancellation.

so you expect them to hand over a laptop to someone who comes in the store
and tells them they were asked to collect it? - with no proof?

That is their corporate policy, sad they will not even compensate you in any
matter. Sad to say, they even treat their employees worse!
In reality, they are correct in not giving the item to a person without
appropiate identification (Per interpretation of the specific store's
management). That is for the corporate protection, and eventually, as they
say it, to protect their customers??
They will charge your credit card immediately but will not compensate you
in any manner for holding your money for 5 to 7 business days. kinda sucks,
eh! At this point the only thing you can do is to start shopping at another
retailer, and inform C/C via registered mail of your decision.

Just think how simple it would have been just to mail your daughter a
check which she could cash to buy the computer. Or even easier and
faster, to make a free funds transfer from your bank to her bank. No
store turns up its corporate nose at cash.

Yeah; I thought that was funny too.

On the other hand, I bought something via CC's Web site using one of
those computer-generated "temporary" credit card numbers that the
issuers tout for internet security and ran into quite a bit of trouble
when I showed up to pick it up because I couldn't produce the card.

The manager finally accepted my copy of the receipt/invoice that I
printed at home.

That was the first and last time I used the "feature"; I haven't seen
them advertise it recently, so maybe they gave up on it.

I use it all the time. The website clearly says you need to provide the
receipt and the credit card used for the purchase.

It's posted all over the checkout and in the terms you agree to at
purchase that only the credit card holder can pick it up.
All the big box electronics stores work like this.

It works well too, since Circuit City frequently offers on-line discounts
not available in the store, and they apply to customer pickup of an on-line
purchase.

The credit card isn't of any particular value since there's no way to
connect it to the transaction; that's the main attraction of the
feature.

The main attractions of what?

If you buy something via a credit card and return it, you need to present
the credit card to get a refund. They most certainly can associate the
transaction with the credit card.

Those "phony" credit card numbers are designed for on-line purchases.
Obviously, if you use one of those then go to a store for a return you
should be dropped from the gene pool. ;-)
